Post No. 1,511 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,837.33 up 78.18 or 0.61% from Tuesday's close of 12,759.15. Of the 30 Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $108.28 +2.35 2.22% 7,323,700 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $8.02 +0.31 4.02% 326,904,881 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Kraft KFT $37.83 -0.44 1.15% 10,922,748 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.28 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.51(year ago it was 14.69); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.79) and today's dividend yield is 2.55 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.41). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,696.18 up 10.32 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,685.86. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.54 up $0.34 from Tuesday's average closing price of $56.20. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.81 (DD/HD)up $0.60 from Tuesday's median closing price of $48.21. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $85.47 -0.52 0.61% 3,150,701 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.02 +0.31 4.02% 326,904,881 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,032 ($169,618 - $168,586).
MarketWatch Wednesday 3/7/12 4:57 pm by Laura Mandaro & Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks
recovered some of the prior day’s losses Wednesday, helped by an upbeat report on jobs growth, a report the Federal Reserve could implement new bond buys if the economy flags and signs of progress on Greece’s debt swap. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.61% ended up 78.18 points, or 0.6%, to 12,837.33 — a day after falling more than 200 points for its worst single-session drop of the year. Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.25% shares, up 4%, led gains for 23 of 30 components. Stocks added to gains after a report the Federal Reserve, if it were to take new steps to boost the economy in the months ahead, would consider a type of bond-buying program designed to subdue worries about inflation. Traditionally, crude fell when the dollar rose, but global influences have changed that relationship. The Wall Street Journal, in its online edition, said the Fed could print new money to buy long-term mortgage or Treasury bonds, but effectively tie up that money by borrowing it back for short periods at low rates. “There’s a feeling among investors that the odds of additional easing had been going down. A story like this suggests they’re still considering it,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. “All the market heard was ‘new steps.’” The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.69% climbed 9.27 points, or 0.7%, to 1,352.63, with financials and industrials among the sectors leading those gains. Utilities was the only one of 10 sectors to close lower. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.87% gained 25.37 points, or 0.9%, to 2,935.69. No. 1 component Apple Inc. AAPL +0.16% ended up 0.1% in choppy trading after it unveiled a new version of its iPad tablet, which features a high-definition screen, a faster processor and 4G network connectivity on some models. For every stock declining, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was moderate. On the NYSE, 801 million shares traded. NYSE composite volume topped 3.5 billion, under last year’s average but 93% of the past month’s average. Nasdaq composite volume rose above 1.5 billion. Stocks had opened moderately higher after payroll-processor Automatic Data Processing Inc. said U.S. companies added 216,000 employees to their employee rolls last month. Growth was in line with forecasts and instilled some confidence ahead of Friday’s nonfarm-payrolls report from the Labor Department.
The ADP data were “positive,” and the market was “reacting accordingly,” said Peter Tuz, a portfolio manager at Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Va.
“We’ll see what happens Friday. I’m still thinking we’re going to see a gain in jobs, private-sector jobs especially,” said Tuz of Friday’s report. Also, the Institute of International Finance — a trade group that helped negotiate the terms of Greece’s debt restructuring with its private-sector bondholders — said 30 members holding 81 billion euros in outstanding Greek debt had agreed to participate in the program. Greece’s Finance Ministry has said bondholders representing 75% of privately held Greek debt must sign up by a Thursday deadline for the deal to go forward. On Tuesday, Wall Street tumbled on worries that too few bondholders would agree to Greece’s debt restructuring, derailing a second bailout for the government and ushering in a new round of pain for the rest of the euro zone. Recent concerns about Greece are not a “reason to sell everything, but it’s reason to stay alert for next few days through possible but improbable glitches,” said Jerry Webman, chief economist at OppenheimerFunds. “I don’t want to tell people this is all over,” he added. However, “I strongly think interests are strongly aligned to get the deal done.“ Gold and oil futures also added to gains after the report on the Fed’s possible next steps. Oil for April delivery CLJ2 +1.39% rose $1.46, or 1.4%, to $106.16 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, turning higher after a weekly supply report had inventory up less than expected. Gold for April delivery GCJ2 +0.78% gained $11.80, or 0.7%, to $1,683.90 an ounce.
