A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 13,239.13 up 6.51 or 0.05% from Friday's close of 13,232.62. For the year the Dow is up 8.36%. Of the 30 Dow components 16 gained and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $57.24 +0.69 1.22% 4,859,861 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was United Technologies UTX $84.62 -0.86 1.01% 4,445,398 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $9.522 -0.278 2.84% 637,471,431 NYSE.
WSJ pC4 "Apple boosts stocks" by Matt Jarzemsky says stocks were up after a steady reading from homebulders & news of Apple's plan to return cash to shareholders. Bank of America is charted under Bad News as it was the biggest Dow loser.
NYT pB6 "Apple elevates markets, especially the S&P 500" by Bloomberg and USA Today p4B "Apple plan helps S&P hit its highest point since '08" by Bloomberg says this was due to Apple announcing it will pay a dividend and buy back $10 bil in stock.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "nasdaq, S&P notch fresh multiyear highs" by Vince Mao says stocks extended their winning ways Mon with most major averages hitting fresh multiyear highs as Monday's action was up in lighter vol with the current outlook still a confirmed uptrend.
Fin Times p22 "Apple makes healthy gains as it prepares for dividend payments" by Arash Massoudi says tech stocks pushed the S&P to another high as Apple said it would begin making div payments for the first time since '95.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C8 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.82 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.81 (year ago it was 14.41); today's P/E estimate is 12.83 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.83 (year ago it was 12.29) and today's dividend yield is 2.47 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.46). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,749.28 up 0.86 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,748.42. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.31 up $0.03 from Friday's average closing price of $58.28. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.03 (DD/HD)down $0.18 from Friday's median closing price of $51.21. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.1 -0.10 0.17% 2,182,217 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.522 -0.278 2.84% 637,471,431 NYSE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $86 ($174,928 - $174,842).
MarketWatch Monday 3/19/12 4:11 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks Monday closed out a low-volume session with minor gains, supported by housing data and Apple Inc.'s AAPL +0.31% plans for a dividend, but held back as investors bought cautiously after stock indexes gained 8%-18% this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.05% rose 6.51 points, or 0.1%, to 13,239.13. The S&P 500 SPX +0.40% added 5.58 points, or 0.4%, to 1,409.75. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.76% rose 23.06 points, or 0.8%, to 3,078.32. "We're faced with a market that's just up a long way," said Ken Tower, senior analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service. "People are starting to be more choosy about when they're buying, and some short-term people are taking profits."
