A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily and the combined Sat/Sun issues of the Wall St. Journal and Sunday's and Saturday's issues of New York Times and Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,977.57 down 2.73 or 0.02% from Thursday's close of 12,980.30. Sat WSJ "Blue chip stocks close week treading in red" by Christian Berthelsen says stocks finished slightly lower with the Dow seeing their first weekly loss in 3 weeks despite closing above 13000 on Tues. without major economic data releases or corp news to provide direction, stocks drifted lower. Indexes fell on the open continued downward until mid afternoon on Fri, then recovered & peaked briefly into positive territory before falling. The Dow fell less than the other indexes primarily on the strength of IBM which rose $1.28. The move accounted for nearly 10 points in the Dow's performance. Blue chips were weighed down by American express which declined 58 cents.
Sat NYT pB6 "energy shares are lower in a down day on Wall St" by Reuters says stocks ended the day lower on Fri but the S&P and Nasdaq indexrd still closed with weekly gains for the 8th week out of the last nine. The decline hit enerhy shares sending the S&P energy sector index down 1.1%. Exxon declined 0.6%.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks mixed for week, but IBD 50 stays on top" by Paul Whitfield says stocks strayed lower Fri as volume fell on both major exchanges. The S&P lost 0.3% and the Nasdaq and NYSE were also down. The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.52 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 14.89); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.67) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,714.72 down 0.36 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,715.08. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.16 down $0.01 from Thursday's average closing price of $57.17. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.43 (DD/HD)up $0.0715 from Thursday's median closing price of $49.36. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.01 -0.41 0.7% 2,176,857 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.13 +0.01 0.12% 142,117,460 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $36 ($171,508 - $171,472).
MarketWatch Friday 3/2/12 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks and the dollar declined Friday, positioning the Dow Jones Industrial Average for its third weekly loss in nine weeks this year. Energy firms fell the most among the S&P 500 Index’s 10 major sectors as crude ended down for its first week in four. “Markets don’t move in a straight line, and obviously there’s a risk of a pullback here,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Off 0.1% from the week-ago close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.02% fell 6.66 points, or 0.1%, to 12,973.64, with 15 of its 30 components in the red. Situated for a 0.3% weekly gain, the S&P 500 SPX -0.33% shed 4.50 points, or 0.3%, at 1,369.59, with energy firms hardest hit, a day after President Barack Obama called on Congress to end $4 billion in subsidies for oil and gasoline companies. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.43% declined 12.48 points, or 0.4%, to 2,976.47, a level that has it 0.4% up from last Friday’s close. For every share rising two fell on the New York Mercantile Exchange, where 460 million shares traded as of 3:20 p.m. Eastern.
Down 2.8% for the week, crude-oil futures CLJ2 -1.98% shed $2.14, or 2%, to settle at $106.70 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The drop came after Saudi Arabia denied a report of a pipeline explosion. The report by Iran’s state-run television on Thursday briefly pushed crude above $110 a barrel. The price of crude has climbed this year on worries that a standoff between Western countries and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program might spark conflict in the Persian Gulf region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected in Washington on Monday to talk about the issue. “Israel cares much more about Iran having a bomb than the price of oil, while the West and East have an overwhelming interest in keeping the flow of oil going,” said Kelly at J.P. Morgan Funds. The dollar DXY +0.81% rose against other global currencies including the euro EURUSD -0.81% and the yen USDJPY +0.74%. While equities’ near-stead rise has many analysts, including Kelly, saying a pullback, even short-term, was likely in store.
But investors should be cautious in banking on a market retreat, given any drops could be likened to “small waves in a rising tide,” Kelly said. From his perspective, the overall economic and market climate is only getting better, as evidenced by recent data that had U.S. auto sales in February rising to their highest level since before the recession and same-store sales up 6.4% at the 18 retail chains that reported February figures. “The main stories are in place, the U.S. economy is clearly improving here, with 15 million units in vehicle sales and strong chain-store sales,” said Kelly. “Consumer spending is coming back, and what that says is, consumer confidence is coming back. That also affects hiring, business and investor behavior,” he added.
