Post No. 1,527 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/7/12 and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings as of 3/7/12.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,232.62 down 20.14 or 0.15% from Thursday's close of 13,252.76. For the week the Dow is up 310.6 or 2.4% from last Friday's close of 12,922.02. Of the 30 Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $206.55 +0.55 0.27% 6,262,366 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $9.78 +0.54 5.84% 532,947,551 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies UTX $85.48 -1.41 1.62% 7,629,937 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.83 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.77 (year ago it was 14.11); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.39 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.39 (year ago it was 12.42) and today's dividend yield is 2.47 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,748.42 down 2.65 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,751.07. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.28 down $0.09 from Thursday's average closing price of $58.37. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.21 (DD/HD)down $0.16 from Thursday's median closing price of $51.37. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $59.185 +0.105 0.18% 4,150,019 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.78 +0.54 5.84% 532,947,551 NYSE.

If Frisday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $265 ($175,107 - $174,842).

MarketWatch Friday 3/16/12 3:35 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes were virtually flat Friday, curbing weekly gains, after an index of consumer confidence unexpectedly fell in March. “The data was mildly disappointing, but it’s important not to read too much into one number. There was nothing too concerning considering the strong data we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks,” said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at the Schwab Center for Financial Research.
Up 2.5% for the not-yet-ended week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.15% fell 4.17 points, or less than 0.1%, to 13,248.59. The S&P 500 SPX +0.11% added 1.25 point to 1,403.85, with energy leading sector gains and utilities losing the most ground among its 10 major industry groups. The index was up 2.4% from the week-ago close. Stock futures advanced after a reading on consumer prices rose, as investors look ahead to reports on industrial production and consumer sentiment, The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.04% declined 3.06 points, or 0.1%, to 3,053.31, readying it for a weekly gain of 2.2%. Shares of Apple Inc. AAPL -0.10% wavered between gains and losses as the technology giant’s third-generation iPad went on sale Friday. For every seven stocks advancing eight fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 885 million shares traded as of 3:20 p.m. Eastern. Crude prices rose, with oil futures for April delivery CLJ2 +2.01% rising $1.95 to end at $107.06 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. “We can of course point our finger directly at gasoline prices, which are up another seven cents week over week,” said Miller Tabak equity strategist Peter Boockvar, referring to the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters sentiment gauge. The index’s preliminary reading for March had confidence dipping to 74.3 in March, its first decline since August. But, “energy costs for the consumer are not what it would seem with the increase in gas prices,” said Sorensen, who adds that the rise in prices at the pump has been offset by the sharp drop in the cost of natural gas. Read more about natural-gas prices. Americans also spent less heating their homes during the mild winter, and are already driving less to reduce the money spent filling their tanks, Sorensen noted. Ahead of the opening bell, the Labor Department reported consumer prices rose less than expected last month, rising 0.4% versus expectations of a 0.5% increase. Core prices that remove volatile food and energy costs rose 0.1% versus expectations of a 0.2% uptick. “The CPI is for many, the all-important measure of consumer prices throughout the economy and when viewed that way, the less-than-expected gain in core prices will be a welcome development,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. Other economic reports Friday had the Federal Reserve reporting the output of U.S. factories, mines and utilities held flat in February, while January production was revised to a 0.4% increase from an initial estimate of unchanged.

MarketWatch Thursday 3/15/12 4:39 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose Thursday, lifting the S&P 500 index past 1,400 for the first time since June 2008, after another round of strong reports on jobless claims and manufacturing. “We had a treasure trove of economic news today, all of it good. Weekly claims were the best they’ve been in four years, and indicates the strength we’ve seen in the last six months is going to continue,” said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors Inc. The S&P 500 SPX +0.60% advanced 8.32 points, or 0.6%, to 1,402.60, crossing and closing above 1,400 for the first time since the index of large-cap stocks was coming down off a record high in October 2007. It’s still about 10% away from that all-time peak of 1,565.15. On Thursday, financials fed sector gains and utilities represented the only declining sector among 10. “When things are really good, it’s hard to stay bullish. This market has gone up pretty dramatically, so it feels like it’s gotten ahead of itself, but the reality is I’m not sure that it has,” said Sandy Lincoln, chief market strategist at BMO Asset Management. “I still find myself weighted more toward stocks than fixed income because the economic backdrop is better and the Federal Reserve is encouraging risk-taking.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.45% rose 58.66 points, or 0.4%, to 13,252.76, extending its winning run into a seventh session, its longest up streak since the eight-day period ending Feb. 9, 2011. Bank of America Corp. BAC +4.52% led blue-chip gains, while Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO -1.41% fell the most after the network-equipment maker said it would acquire NDS Group Ltd. for about $5 billion, including the taking on of debt. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.51% rose 15.64 points, or 0.5%, to 3,056.37. Read how Nasdaq has returned to 3,000 on half the volume. For every two shares falling, roughly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 844 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.2 billion. Nasdaq exchange volume was about 450 million. “The Fed’s financial repression does seem to be having some of the desired effects. They are basically saying we’re going to keep these yields very unattractive for a very long period of time,” a positive scenario for consumers and corporate refinancing, commented Lincoln. “It’s a huge factor in consumer cash flow, since about 80% of mortgage applications are in refinance,” allowing homeowners to substantially lower their monthly mortgage payments. On Thursday, Freddie Mac’s chief economist said rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages this week averaged 3.92%. “Before the recession, mortgage rates were over 6%. It’s a huge tailwind for these markets; the consumer has been able to pay down some debt and continue to buy a bottle of wine with a cork in it,” said Lincoln. Oil prices continued to slide, with crude futures for April delivery CLJ2 +0.04% losing 32 cents to end at $105.11 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Treasury prices were mixed, with yields on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR -0.04% at 2.279%. The Labor Department reported first-time claims for jobless benefits fell by 14,000 to 351,000 last week, returning to a four-year low. The New York Federal Reserve’s gauge of manufacturing in the region in March climbed to 20.2 from 19.5 the month before, reaching a 21-month high in the most recent reading. In a separate report, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s business-condition index rose to 12.5 in March from 10.2 last month. However, some of the underlying details of the regional surveys were mixed, with new orders lower in both. “While the Philly and New York manufacturing surveys rose to multimonth highs, the components were very mixed and thus more manufacturing data in other regions of the country need to be seen to draw more specific conclusions about growth,” said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. But BMO Asset Management’s Lincoln cautions against reading too much into surveys that can be “extraordinarily volatile month to month,” saying “the trend has been your friend on that stuff.”
