Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16257.94 down 179.11 or 1.09% from Friday's close of 16437.05. Of the Dow components   only Merck  gained and  29  declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise    and percentage-wise was Merck up $3.24 or 6.5%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  IBM down $3.13 and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 2.94%.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2531.62 down 27.89  from Friday's closing numerator of 2559.51. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.



As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.16 up from Friday's trailing P/E of 16.88 (last year it was 14.92). Monday's P/E estimate is 14.82 up from Friday's closing P/E estimate of 14.75 (year ago it was 12.21) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.33 up from Friday's closing dividend yield of 2.32 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.


The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.39 down 93 cents from Friday's average closing price of $85.32. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.23 (WMT/HD) down 80 cents from Friday's median closing price of $80.03 (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.


If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,789    ($255,951 - $253,162).

 A read of the print editions of Monday's Financial News,  Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal,  New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16437.05 down 7.71 or 0.05% from Thursday's close of 16444.76. For the week the Dow was down 32.94 or  or 0.20% from last Friday's close of 16469.99.  For the year the Dow is down 0.05%. Of the Dow components   15  gained and 15   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise    and percentage-wise was Chevron up $2.28 or 1.85%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 1.44%.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2559.51 down 3.84 from Thursday's closing numerator of 2563.35. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.03 (WMT/HD) up 20 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $79.83. (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

 MarketWatch 1/10/14 Fri. 4:09 pm by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended mostly higher on Friday, as investors appeared to shrug off a much weaker-than-expected report on December jobs growth. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.23% gained 4.24 points, or 0.2%, to end at 1,842.37, leaving it up 0.6% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.44% rose 18.47 points, or 0.4%, to 4,174.66, marking a 1% gain for the week. Bucking the positive trend, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.05% fell 7.71 points, or nearly 0.1%, to 16,437.05, with UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH +0.24% and Chevron Corp. CVX -1.85% leading the blue-chip index lower. The Dow posted a loss of 0.2% for the week.
