MarketWatch 1/29/14 Tues. 4:41 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks fell 1% on Wednesday, extending losses after the Fed announced it will reduce monthly bond purchases by another $10 billion and failed to mention the recent emerging markets turmoil that has knocked U.S. stocks off their highs.
The outcome was in line with forecasts, though it may have derailed some trades betting the Fed would make a nod to the recent market setback. The Fed also signaled that it is likely to keep reducing its purchases in the coming months, citing a pickup in economic activity and improvement in the labor market. In a struggling economy, banks can use new customers as much as any other business. But banks are steering far wide of medicinal marijuana, online gambling, and virtual currencies that may be legal but might attract Uncle Sam’s eye.Stocks were down sharply ahead of the meeting, the last with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at the helm, after rate hikes in Turkey and South Africa failed to stem drops in their currencies. The S&P 500 SPX -1.02% closed 18.30 points, or 1%, lower at 1,774.20, falling below the key resistance level of 1,775 to its lowest close since mid-November. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.19% fell 189.77 points, or 1.2% to 15,738.79, recording its fifth triple-digit loss this month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -1.14%  lost 46.53 points, or 1.1%, to close at 4,051.43.DJIA 15,738.79, -189.77, -1.19%
“We think the situation in emerging markets is not as bad as it sounds when you look at fundamentals. At this point we do not fear the type of contagion seen in 1990s with crisis in Asia. Valuations are inexpensive, markets are not overleveraged and growth rates remain robust compared to developed countries. We would consider emerging-markets equities as a good buying opportunity,” Davidson added.
After steep drops in emerging-markets currencies last week, several central banks acted to stop the run on their currencies. India, Turkey and most recently South Africa raised their interest rates. But even the big rate hike in Turkey won’t stop speculators taking the Turkish lira down, said analysts, and the lira and South African rand dropped Wednesday. The failure of emerging-markets central banks to stem the asset flight has rattled U.S. stock investors, who are fearful of a spreading global crisis and cognizant that last year’s steep U.S. equities gains aren’t likely to be replicated.Joe Bell, senior equity analyst at Schaeffer’s Investment Research said ahead of the FOMC meeting that the session’s selling could also be attributed to profit-taking.
“Emerging markets have been underperforming for a while now, and since October of last year have been on the downtrend,” Bell said.“Markets have rallied too far too fast last year and are overextended. Earnings haven't been too terrible, but they haven't been great either. This consolidation is still mild given the record levels we’ve reached only a few weeks ago,” he added.A mixed bag of earnings added to pessimism on Wall Street.

MarketWatch 1/28/14 Tues. 4:39 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday with best gains in two weeks, as indexes rebounded from heavy losses, which bruised the markets in the previous three sessions. Rising emerging markets, upbeat earnings from Pfizer Inc. and Ford Motor Co. as well as a rise in consumer confidence lifted sentiment. The S&P 500 SPX +0.61%  closed up 10.94 points, or 0.6%, at 1,792.50, snapping a three-day skid. This kind of bounce is expected when markets are oversold and calm returns,” said Rob Stein, CEO of Astor Investment Management.Speaking about economic data, Stein said underlying trends are still strong.“The headline numbers in the durable goods data was lower than expected, but it is a very volatile measure. The underlying trend is still robust and continues to grow. As to the consumer confidence, we tend to discount the index as it is just a survey of how people feel and has little meaning,” Stein said.Consumer confidence climbed in January, with assessments of both the present situation and expectations improving, the Conference Board said Tuesday. The surprise rise took the index to the 80.7 level, topping the economists’ estimate, who expected a slight decline.Earlier, stock-index futures had pared gains after disappointing data on durable goods orders and a small drop in house prices in December.Orders for big-ticket U.S. goods sank 4.3% in December and posted the biggest drop since midsummer, largely because of fewer bookings for autos, large aircraft and military hardware, the government said Tuesday. The disappointing report -- economists expected a 1.8% increase in orders -- could lead to a reduction in forecasts for fourth-quarter gross domestic product.Sital Patel takes a look at which stocks traders will be watching during market action, including Yahoo, AT&T, and Pfizer. Photo: Getty Images.U.S. home prices ticked down 0.1% in November, the first decline in a year, with nine of 20 tracked cities posting price drops as winter approached, according to data released Tuesday.Investors will also focus on the Federal Reserve, which begins its two-day meeting on Tuesday.
