http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,540 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16373.86 down 40.49 or 0.25%  from Tuesday's close of 16414.44. For the year the Dow is down 1.23%. Of the Dow components 10   gained and  20  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was  and percentage-wise was Boeing up $2.70 or 1.91%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM down $6.04 or 3.21%.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2549.59 down 6.40  from  Tuesday's closing numerator of 2555.99. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Big Blue htis Blue Chips" by Alexandra Scaggs says a decline in IBM dragged down the Dow but broader gauges of the US stock market rose.

IBD pB2 "Nasdaq leads advance amid earnings news flurry" by David Saito-Chung says Nasdaq cont'd to dominate its index peers Wed scoring a 5th gain in six sessions as Wednesday's action saw mild gains in lighter trade and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

FTp23 "Norfolk Southern speeds ahead as goods shipments lift profits" by Eric Platt says IBM was the worst performing stock on the Dow falling 4% as rev dropped 5% to $27.7 bil.

NYT pB9 "Wall St yearns as earnings come in mixed" by Reuters says the stock market showed little change Wed.  IBM's decline offset modest gains from United Technologies which rose $1.13 after it reported 4Q earnings that topped estimates but rev was short of expectations.

AJC pA11 "IBM a drag on Dow" by AP says the stock market was mixed Wed as investors pored over earnings reports.  IBM accounted for most of the loss in the Dow after a weak earnings report.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.31 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E of 16.61 (last year it was 15.25). Today's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Wednesday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.28) and today's dividend yield is 2.09 unchanged from yesterday's closing dividend yield of 2.09 (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.99 down 21 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $85.20. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.78 (WMT/HD) down 27 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $78.15    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $640    ($255,599 - $254,959).

MarketWatch 1/22/14 Wed. 4:07 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks closed mostly higher on Wednesday after trading in a narrow range for most of the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.25% closed 40.58 points, or 0.3%, lower at 16,373.86, falling for the second day in a row. The S&P 500 SPX +0.06% finished the day up 1.07 points, or 0.1%, to 1,844.87. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.41% was the best performing index, gaining 17.24 points, or 0.4%, to 4,243.00, its highest level since July 17, 2000. The tech-heavy index gained in five out of last six trading days and is the only measure with year-to-date gains.
