Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16414.44 down 44.12 or 0.27%  from Friday's close of 16458.56.  Of the Dow components 12   gained and  18  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Boeing up $1.21 and percentage-wise was Coke up 1.63 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs down $3.08 or 1.75%.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2555.99 down 6.87  from  Friday's closing numerator of 2562.86. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.



As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.04 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 17.08 (last year it was 15.12). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Friday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.28) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.08 down from Friday's closing dividend yield of 2.09 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.


The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.20down 23 cents from Friday's average closing price of $85.43. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.15 (WMT/HD) down 45 cents from Friday's median closing price of $78.60    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.


If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $687    ($256,286 - $255,599).

VZ -1.34% and The Travelers Companies, Inc. TRV -1.71% weighed on the Dow. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.27% closed 44.12 points, or 0.3%, lower at 16,414.44. The S&P 500 SPX +0.28% finished the day up 5.10 points, or 0.3%, to 1,843.80, breaking a two-day losing streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.67% was the best performing index, gaining 28.18 points, or 0.7%, to 4,225.76, its highest level since Sep 1, 2000. The gains in the index were driven by a rally in Apple, Inc., APPL +19.38% its heaviest-weighted component.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16458.56 up 41.55 or 0.25%  from Thursday's close of 16417.01.  For the week the Dow is up $21.51 or 0.13%  from last Friday's close of 16,437.05. For the year the Dow is down 0.71%.  Of the Dow components 9   gained and 21   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Visa up $10.41 or 4.69%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Nike down $1.40 and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.6 %.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2562.86 up 6.47  from Thursday's closing numerator of 2556.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Investors also digested a mixed bag of economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.25% closed 41.55 points, or 0.3%, higher at 16,458.56 as gains in Visa Inc. and American Express Company lifted the index.
