1/6/14 Mon. pm Dow Closes at 16425.10 down 44.89 or 0.27%

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,512 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013  and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16425.10 down 44.89 or 0.27%   from  Friday's  close of 16469.99. Of  the Dow components 11    gained and   19  declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise    and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $1.22 or 0.68%.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $1.33  and percentage-wise was Microsoft down 2.11 %.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2557.65 down 6.99   from Friday's closing numerator of 2564.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

As of the open  of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.96 unchanged from Friday's  trailing P/E of 16.96   (last year it was 14.92).  Monday's   P/E estimate is  15.25 unchanged    from Friday's closing  P/E estimate of 15.25   (year ago it was 12.22) and Monday's  dividend yield is  2.07 up from Thursday's closing  dividend yield of 2.31  (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.25 down 24 cents from  Friday's average closing price of $85.49.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.66     (WMT/HD) down 61 cents from Friday's median closing price of $80.27.     (WMT/HD).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $699  ( $256,464 - 255,765).

MarketWatch 1/6/14 Mon. 4:24 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks  closed lower on Monday, with the S&P 500 index falling for a third consecutive session after weaker-than-expected services-sector data.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average                 DJIA -0.27%  fell 44.89 points, or 0.3%, to 16,425.10.
The S&P 500                 SPX -0.25% dropped 4.60 points, or 0.3%, to 1,826.77, and the Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.44%  lost 18.23 points, or 0.4%, to 4,113.68. For both indexes, it was the third straight day of losses. “After the superb gains in 2013, a modest pullback in the S&P 500 is both warranted and understandable,” said Terry Sandven, senior equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.    “If there is a pullback, it is likely to get to the 50-day moving-average level, which is a 2% or 2.5% drop from current levels, before we see buyers move back in,” Sandven said.
“However, we think the environment is favorable for equities in 2014, as the economy continues to improve, valuations are not extreme and inflation, which is the key driver, is benign,” he added.
The Institute for Supply Management said Monday its services index for December decelerated to 53% from 53.9% in November. While the number still indicates expansion, it lagged the 55% expected by economists polled by MarketWatch. In a separate report, orders for goods produced in U.S. factories jumped 1.8% in November, beating expectations of a 1.6% rise. The increase, led by orders for durable goods, suggests the manufacturing sector enjoyed stronger growth than the services side of the economy toward the end of last year.
Last week, the ISM manufacturing data showed that the increase in new orders last month was the largest in more than two-and-a-half years, while manufacturing employment accelerated.
The overall improving economy, along with the falling unemployment rate and an improving housing market, has prompted the Federal Reserve to begin tapering its monthly asset-buying program by $10 billion to $75 billion a month. The U.S. Senate is expected to confirm Janet Yellen, currently the Fed’s vice chair, as the new Fed chief in a vote on Monday.

MarketWatch 1/3/14 Fri. 4:37 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended a choppy trading session mostly lower on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke defended the extraordinary measures undertaken by the central bank to boost the economic recovery.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.03%  slipped less than a point to end at 1,831.37, leaving it down 0.5% for the week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.17%  closed up 28.64 points, or 0.2%, at 16,469.99, but finished the week marginally lower.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.27%  shed 11.16 points, or 0.3%, to 4,131.91 on Friday and lost 0.6% for the week.
Volumes on Wall Street were thin, with many traders still on vacation. Also, a major storm in the Northeast hampered travel and states of emergency were declared in New York and New Jersey.
“Next week volumes will rise as market participants will be back to work and investors will be reallocating portfolios for 2014,” said Channing Smith, managing director at Capital Advisors.
U.S. stocks perked up briefly in the afternoon after the Fed Chairman Bernanke spoke at the American Economics Association conference. He defended Fed policy, including its asset-buying program.
Last month, the Fed said it would reduce its monthly asset purchases by $10 billion to $75 billion, but stressed it was committed to low interest rates until further declines in the unemployment rate. Critics of the bond-buying program see the Fed’s $4 trillion balance sheet as a potential future cause of inflation, while proponents worry the withdrawal of monetary stimulus will hamper the economic recovery.
During the session, markets reacted negatively to comments by Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser, who said the central bank may have to be “aggressive” in raising interest rates. Plosser is known for his hawkish views and becomes a voting Federal Open Market Committee member this year.
