Post No. 2,527 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16373.86 up 115.92 or 0.71% from Monday's close of 16257.94. For the year the Dow is down 1.22%. Of the Dow components 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up $3.75 and percentage-wise was Intel up 3.96%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down 69 cents or 0.49%.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2549.67 up 18.05 from Monday's closing numerator of 2531.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
WSJ pBC4 "Stocks get a lift from retail sales" by Alexandra Scaggs says the Dow snapped a 4 day losing streak due to better economic news. JPMorgan was up 4 cents after its 4Q earnings topped estimates although profit and rev declined from a year earlier due to a drop in investment banking earnings. Intel is charted under Good News due to JPMorgan raising it to overweight from neutral.
NYT pB8 "Wall street answers a plummet with a leap" & AJC pA9 "Tech stocks elad gains for the day" by AP says a day after the worst performance of the year the market bounced back with the best day of '14 as analysts raised their assessments of Intel and Jabil Circuit. Also a report on retail sales increased 0.7% in Dec. boosted investor confidence.
FT p21 "Upgrade lfits Intel as rebound ushers in US reporting season" says Intel rose after JPMorgan upgraded it. JPMorgan was up as its earnings beat analysts' estimates.
IBD pB4 "Market uptrend resumes as nasdaq hits new high" by Ken Shreve says dual upgrades for Intel ahead of its earnings boosted sentiment. Tuesday's action saw solid gains in lower trade while the current outlook is the uptrend resumes.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.94 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 16.82 (last year it was 14.99). Today's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Tuesday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.21) and today's dividend yield is 2.09 down from yesterday's closing dividend yield of 2.11 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.99 up 60 cents from Monday's average closing price of $84.39. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.49 (WMT/HD) up 26 cents from Monday's median closing price of $79.23 (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,805 ($254,967 - $253,162).
MarketWatch 1/14/14 Tues. 5:07 pm by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks rallied to their best day of the year Tuesday as investors welcomed stronger-than-expected retail sales, got a boost from Google Inc. and Apple Inc., and absorbed earnings results from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.The S&P 500 SPX +1.08% closed 19.68 points, or 1.1%, higher at 1,838.88, with the technology sector leading broad-based gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.71% rose 115.92 points, or 0.7% to 16,373.86, breaking a four-session losing streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.70% gained 69.71 points, or 1.7% to 4,183.02 and turned positive this year with a gain of 0.15%, according to FactSet data.A batch of economic data released on Tuesday comforted those who are betting on stronger growth.
Retail sales
in December rose more than expected, as Americans bought more clothes
and food during the holidays, shopping at retailers’ brick-and-mortar
stores as well as online, according to government data.
Inventories at U.S. businesses also rose more than forecast in November, according to data released by the U.S. Commerce Department, while prices of goods imported
into the U.S. were unchanged in December and fell slightly for the
full year, the U.S. Department of Labor said Tuesday. Small business
owners also grew more optimistic, as the index measuring the sentiment
rose 1.4 points to 93.9 in December. The National Federation of Independent Business
said the index was nonetheless short of its recovery high of 95.4 and
well below the readings over 100 that typify post-recession periods.Brad
McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial, said two
forces were driving stocks right now.
“On the one hand, recent data suggest that the economic growth is
accelerating, which should be good news for the corporations whose
revenues will be dependent on such growth. On the other hand, if the
economy grows faster than we think and is overheating, the Fed will
accelerate tapering but more importantly might start tightening sooner
than what markets are expecting at the moment,” McMillan said.
“All
this means that investors should be cautious about the stock
markets this year, especially as our research shows that more than 80%
of stocks on the S&P 500 are trading above their historical
price-to-book valuations,” he added.Investors also focused on earnings
from two of the country’s largest banks. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.
JPM
