Post No. 2,530 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16417.01 down 64.93 or 0.39% from Wednesday's close of 16481.94. Of the Dow components 9 gained, Cisco was unchanged and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.02 and percentage-wise was McDonald's up 0.63%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $3.58 and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth Group down 2.78%.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2556.39 down 10.11 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 2566.50. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.06 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 16.94 (last year it was 14.95). Today's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Wednesday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.21) and today's dividend yield is 2.08 down from yesterday's closing dividend yield of 2.09 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.21 down 34 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $85.55. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.01 (WMT/HD) down 36 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.37 (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would havelost $1,011 ($256,650 $255,629).

The tech-heavy index turned positive for the year after sharp gains on
Tuesday. John Fox, director of research at Fenimore Asset Management, says that
markets have already priced in the possibility of the Fed completing its
taper by the end of the year, and that if it happens early, it will
have a minimal impact.“The economy is improving, which means better corporate earnings. We
have created more than 2 million jobs and at 10-year yield below 3%,
markets can only go up. At current multiples, markets will go up even if
the 10-year yields rise to 3.5%, because at a price-to-earnings ratio
of 17.6, there is room for a bit more expansion,” Fox said.Upbeat earnings results from Bank of America

Stocks added to gains after the Federal Reserve released a report, known as the Beige Book, saying the U.S. economy is continuing to grow
at a moderate pace and the economic outlook is positive, confirming
recent economic indicators. Earlier, the Federal Reserve Bank of New
York’s report showed manufacturing activity in the New York region surged in January, far more than anticipated, after three months of weak readings.Separately, U.S. wholesale prices rose
in December for the first time in three months, largely reflecting
higher costs for gasoline and tobacco, the U.S. Department of Labor

research note that the “second-year curse” may offer a better indication
as to how the year may unfold.“Year two of the presidential cycle has typically been a volatile one
for investors. Will the year-two curse repeat in 2014? It may,
particularly if a temporary economic soft spot develops in the second
quarter. Weak economic data readings led to 5% or more pullbacks
beginning in the spring of each of the past four years,” Kleintop wrote.
