Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 9, 2013 and a summary of Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Dec. 9, 2013.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16373.86 down 40.49 or 0.25%  from Tuesday's close of 16414.44. Of the Dow components 10   gained and  20  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was  and percentage-wise was Boeing up $2.70 or 1.91%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM down $6.04 or 3.21%.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2549.59 down 6.40  from  Tuesday's closing numerator of 2555.99. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.


As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.61 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 17.04 (last year it was 15.17). Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.82 unchanged from Tuesday's closing P/E estimate of 14.82 (year ago it was 12.28) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.09 up from Friday's closing dividend yield of 2.08 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.


The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.99 down 21 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $85.20. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $77.78 (WMT/HD) down 27 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $78.15    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume was GE.


If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $640    ($255,599 - $254,959).

Markets shrugged off mostly disappointing earnings, but results from IBM IBM -0.08% weighed on the blue chips. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.25% closed 40.58 points, or 0.3%, lower at 16,373.86, falling for the second day in a row. The S&P 500 SPX +0.06% finished the day up 1.07 points, or 0.1%, to 1,844.87. The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16414.44 down 44.12 or 0.27%  from Friday's close of 16458.56.  For the year the Dow is down 0.98%. Of the Dow components 12   gained and  18  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Boeing up $1.21 and percentage-wise was Coke up 1.63 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs down $3.08 or 1.75%.

WSJ p C4 "Stocks mixed after profit reports" by Kiatlyn Kiernan says US stocks finished mixed as the latest batch of earnings news fialed to give the market a fresh sense of direction.  Travelers and Verizon led declines in the Dow after reporting results Tues.  Travelers declined $1.47 despite beating 4Q earnings and rev expectations amid price increases & few claims costs a year after Sandy.  Verizon dropped 65 cents after it swung to a 4Q profit as it continues to benefit from subscriber growth.

FT p21 "Alcoa leads gainers as hpes for global aluminium brighten" by Eric Platt says Verizon shares fell 3% after it said it would prucahse an internet tv biz from Intel.  Overall, US marekts started the week lower, adding to the year's losses & shrugging off higehr growth targets from the IMF.

AJC pA9 "Indexes mixed on earnings" by AP says the stock market was mixed on Tues.  The Dow fell after a weak outlook from health care giant Johnson & Johnson.  Verizon dropped after reporting earnings.

IBD pB4 "Stocks shake off midday weakness, but Dow lags" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says the market seesawed but managed to close mostly higher Tues as leading stocks showed some spunk.  tueday's action saw indexes reverse higher as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.  The Dow slid as Travelers, Verizon & Johnson & Johnson fell after announcing quarterly results. After the close IBM weighed in with mixed results and shares slipped in extended trading.
