3/12/15 Thurs. am Apple's iTunes, Apps Back after Breakdown

Post No. 3,083 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17635.39 down 27.55 or 0.16%  from Tuesday's close of 17662.94. For the year the Dow is down 1.05%. Of the Dow components   12 gained  and 18   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $1.47 and percentage-wise was Intel up 1.99%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was  Walmart down $1.38 or 1.68%.

AJC pA17 "Stocks stabilize after sell-off" by AP says US stocks indexes closed slightly lower Wed stabilizing a day after their biggest sell-off in 2 months.  No obvious catalyst pushed them either way.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.70 down  from Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.72 (last year it was 16.05).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 16.65 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.65 (year ago it was 14.75) and  Thursday's dividend yield is 2.26 up from  Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.23  (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2746.11 down 4.29   from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2750.40.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.54 down 14 cents  from Tuesday's  average closing price of $1.68.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.71  (PG/XOM) down 46 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $83.17 (WMT/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $429  ($275,040 - $274,461).

3/11/15 Wed. 4:32 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, Victor Reklaitis  & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Wednesday, building a little on losses from the previous day, when a dollar surge and growing expectations of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve helped trigger the Dow’s biggest point drop in five months. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.19%  finished lower by 3.92 points, or 0.2%, at 2,040.24 after switching between small gains and losses throughout the session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.16%  closed down by 27.55 points, or 0.2%, to 17,635.39, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.20%  lost 9.85 points, or 0.2%, to end at 4,849.94. The S&P 500 and Dow closed at their lowest levels since Feb. 2, while the Nasdaq ended at its lowest level since Feb. 11.“The topic of discussion remains focused on the Fed’s start, pace and duration of a new rate-tightening program,” said Sam Stovall, equity strategist for S&P Capital IQ, in a note Wednesday. He said his shop still expects stocks will finish up for the year, but in the near term, equities could see consolidation—meaning a drop or sideways action. Some analysts suggested the market is due to calm down.In a note, Goldman Sachs analysts Noah Weisberger and Aleksandar Timcenko said “winds have shifted with a looming U.S. tightening as the current source of market disquiet.” But they think the tightening “will ultimately prove benign, though perhaps after some period of ‘indigestion.”Tuesday’s steep losses erased year-to-date gains for the S&P 500 and the Dow industrials. The two stock benchmarks are both down about 1% for the year as of Wednesday’s close, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq is up 2.4%. Wednesday's muted action came as the dollar continued to push higher against rivals, with the euro EURUSD, -0.04%  trading at a nearly 12-year low.Individual movers & shakers: Tyson Foods Inc. TSN, +0.94%  was the biggest loser among S&P 500 components, closing down 5.6%. Poultry producers took it on the chin after the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that turkey flocks in Missouri and Arkansas have been infected with avian flu.SanDisk Corp. SNDK, +3.20% was one of the S&P 500’s biggest gainers, finishing up by 3.2% after Goldman Sachs analysts added the stock to their so-called conviction buy list.Other markets: Gold GCJ5, -0.55%  fell further as the dollar DXY, +1.07% charged ahead. Oil prices CLJ5, +0.21%  also settled lower. European stocks climbed, aided by the falling euro as the European Central Bank’s bond-buying program continued. In Asia, Hong Kong equities dropped to a two-month low after more signs of weakness in the Chinese economy, though Japanese stocks rebounded.
