Post No. 3,091 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17977.42 up 228.11 or 1.29% from Friday's close of 17749.31. For the year the Dow is up 0.87%. Of the Dow components 28 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Visa up $3.99 and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 2.84%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont down $3.43 or 4.26%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.88 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 15.96). Today's P/E estimate is 16.67 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 16.67 (year ago it was 14.52) and today's dividend yield is 2.48 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.53 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2799.37 up 35.52 from Friday's numerator of 2763.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.31 up $1.18 from Friday's average closing price of $92.13. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.16 (WMT/XOM) up $1.27 from Friday's median closing price of $82.89 (WMT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $3,552 ($279,937 - $276,385).

U.S. stocks kicked off the week on a high note, posting solid gains on Monday, as international markets rallied and investors looked toward the Federal Open Market Committee’s meeting and policy statement on Wednesday. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.35% rose 27.79 points, or 1.4%, to 2,081.19, with nine of its 10 main sectors gaining. Health-care and utility stocks led the gains, while materials lagged behind. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.29% jumped 228.11 points, or 1.3%, to 17,977.42, with 28 of its 30 components finishing higher. The Dow moved triple-digits in the six of the past seven sessions. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.19% added 57.75 points, or 1.2%, to 4,929.51, led by big gains in biotechnology stocks. Colin Cieszinski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said Monday’s action was a typical trading bounce after selling off last week.“Despite today’s bounce the S&P 500 is still rangebound. The upside is capped because so much focus is on the Fed’s tightening plans, but the downside is floored because of growing economy and earnings potential,” Cieszinski said.“This kind of choppy market is normal in a time of transition,” the CMC strategist noted The strengthening dollar drove U.S. stocks to drop on Friday. Plus, Ann Inc. stock made an interesting move. Sara Murray has the details. JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade, said lighter volumes have made it easier for stocks to rebound sharply.“Markets have been oversold and beat up and part of the reason for a sharp bounce is some investors are covering short positions ahead of the Fed decision on Wednesday while light volumes amplify this action,” Kinahan said.He noted that investors have begun unwinding positions ahead of the quadruple witching day on Friday, when all quarterly options and futures contracts expire.Analysts said a rally in European equity markets helped positive mood in the U.S. The German DAX 30 index DAX, +2.24% jumped 2% and climbed above 12,000 for the first time on Monday.
