Post No. 3,112 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of 3/22/15 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 3/22/15.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's  Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal &   Financial Times; Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17712.66 up 34.43 or 0.19%  from Thursday's close of 17678.23. For the week the Dow was down 414.99 or 2.29 from last week's close of 18127.65. For the year the Dow is down 0.62%. Of the Dow components 18  gained  and 12  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Intel up $1.92 or 6.38%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Apple down 99 cents and percentage-wise was  Chevron down 0.92%.

IBD pB9 "Stocks do little quietly, ending a negative week" by Paul Whitfield says stocks shifted sideways in quiet volume Friday as Friday's action was up in lower vol and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

WSJ pB5 "Stocks turn up but still post loss for week" by Corrie Driebusch says US stocks rose snapping a 4 session losing streak with help from a bounce in tech & biotech shares that had plunged earlier in the week.

Sat. NYT pB3 "Market struggles to regain after four day of losses" & Sat. AJC pA12 "Rough week on Wall Street" by AAP says major indexes notched modest gains as biotech stocks battered over the last week were among the top gains while energy stocks lagged as the price of oil fell.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.63 up  from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.60 (last year it was 15.89).  Monday's P/E estimate is 16.30 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.74) and  Monday's dividend yield is 2.51 down from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.52  (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2654.40 up 5.16  from Thursday's average numerator of 2649.24.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.48 up 17 cents from Thursday's closing average of $88.31.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.94  (PG/XOM) down 29 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $83.23 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $516 ($265,440 -$264,924).

3/27/15 Fri. 4:39 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sarah Sjolin says U.S. stocks broke a four-day losing streak by closing slightly higher on Friday, but still posted the biggest weekly loss since the end of January. The main indexes, which were barely in positive territory the entire session, rallied modestly in the last 15 minutes of trading after the release of prepared remarks by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen on monetary policy. Yellen said that gradual rate hikes are likely this year but stressed that the central bank would move cautiously.“I expect that conditions may warrant an increase in the federal funds rate target sometime this year,” Yellen told a conference sponsored by the San Francisco Fed.The S&P 500 SPX, +0.24%  closed 4.87 points, or 0.2%, higher at 2,061.02, but lost 2.2% over the week. The benchmark index inched back into positive territory for the year after Friday’s modest gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.19%  ended the session up 34.43 points, or 0.2% at 17,712.66, but recorded a 2.3% decline over the past week. Transportation stocks were among the biggest losers this week, with the Dow Transportation Average DJT, +0.26%  losing 4.9%.The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.57%  added 27.86 points, or 0.6%, to 4,891.22. The tech-heavy index finished the week down 2.7%. Biotechnology stocks also took a beating this week, with the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF IBB, +1.95%  losing 5.2% over the week.Ahead of the opening bell, investors assessed the government’s final revision to fourth-quarter U.S. GDP, which remained unchanged at 2.2%. The report also showed that quarterly corporate profits over the same period fell for the first time since 2008.Analysts said that worries about sluggish corporate profits have weighed on sentiment. Jeff Carbone, founder and senior partner for Cornerstone Financial Partners, noted that an expected drop in corporate earnings in the fourth quarter is pointing to a sluggish economy.“The weakness over the past week was mostly driven by geopolitical concerns and worries over sluggish profit earnings. We will have to wait until the actual earnings season to find out whether it was weather-related or not,” Carbone said.“We still believe stocks will finish the year higher, but perhaps now is the time to rebalance portfolios,” he added.
