Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of 3/22/15 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 3/22/15.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17678.23 down 40.31 or 0.23%  from Wednesday's close of 17718.54. Of the Dow components 7 gained  and 23  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM up $1.39 or 0.87%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was  American Express down $1.63 or 2.03%.

Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.31 down 20 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $88.51.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.23  (PG/XOM) down 70 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $83.93 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $604 ($265,528 - $264,924).

3/26/15 Thurs. 4:30 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says
After failed attempts at a rebound, U.S. stocks ended Thursday’s choppy session lower, declining for the fourth consecutive session. The benchmark S&P 500 turned negative for the year and recorded its longest losing streak since January. Investors remain nervous amid concerns over poor earnings prospects and worries that the Federal Reserve is moving closer to a rate hike.Military strikes in Yemen had also sent investors scrambling for cover, pushing up prices of perceived havens such as gold and the yen. Oil prices also jumped on fears of a potential supply disruption from the Middle East.Ahead of the opening bell, a better-than-expected report on jobless claims did little to alleviate concerns of a marked slowdown in the economy during the first quarter. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.24% ended 4.90 points, or 0.2% lower at 2,056.15 with eight of its 10 sectors closing in the red. Technology stocks which took a beating on Wednesday rebounded, but modest gains weren't enough to lift the markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.23%  in early trade declined more than 100 points, but closed 40.31 points, or 0.2%, lower at 17,678.23.The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.27%  ended the session down 13.16 points, or 0.3%, to 4,863.36.Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, said that investors certainly have room to worry given that earnings estimates declined markedly, while the economy has softened.“We’ve lost the support of the Fed’s QE program, while there is anxiety about the impending interest rate increases. With multiples this high, there are more chances of corrections,” McCain said.McCain stressed that this is still not a time to capitulate on stocks in the long term.Michael O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading, says the market is reassessing data and starting to view previous tailwinds as headwinds.

USAT p1B "Dow falls back in the red for 2015" by David Carrig says the big drop in stocks came after a disappointing manufacturing report and news of a mega merger between Heinz and Kraft.

NYT pB4 "Shares slide again hobbled by tech"  &  AJC pA17 "Stocks down for a third day" by AP says investors dumped tech and biotech firms and the marked drifted lower due to news that orders for long lasting US goods fell last month.

3/25/15 Wed. 4:51 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks were bludgeoned in Wednesday trading with the Dow threatening a 300-point drop as the Nasdaq Composite suffered its steepest decline since April 2014 as investors dumped technology and biotechs shares. The carnage on the Street marks the third consecutive losing session, with the S&P 500 and Dow industrials recording the sharpest losses in two weeks and occurred as one of the year’s biggest mergers, a deal between Kraft Foods Group Inc. and H.J. Heinz Co., was announced in the morning.Analysts attributed the selloff to pre-earnings season jitters and investors cashing out of stocks in companies that have seen big run-ups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -2.37%  ended the day down 118.21 points, or 2.4%, at 4,876.52.ost 19.06 points, or 0.9%, to 2,072.44. Biotechnology stocks were hit the hardest, with the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF IBB, -0.06%  dropping 4.1%.The S&P 500 SPX, -1.46%  fell 30.45 points, or 1.5% to 2,061.05, with nine of its 10 main sectors finishing sharply lower. Energy sectors stocks defied the trend and followed a rally in oil prices higher sparked by an intensifying conflict in Yemen. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.62%  lost 292.60 points, or 1.6% to 17,718.54, and turned negative for the year. All but two of its 30 components closed lower.   Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, said investors are beginning to fret about first-quarter earnings and fear the disappointment will be worse than expected. “Traders began buying protection from downside, which means they are very nervous,” Krosby said, pointing to a jump in the implied volatility as measured by the CBOE volatility index, which rose 13% to 15.42.“Investors have been selling top-performing, high-beta stocks for several sessions now, so people owning biotechs and high-flying tech stocks decided to lock in profits and exit before the earnings season began,” Krosby said.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds, also attributed the selling action to the jitters stemming from uncertainty about the Fed policy and expectations that earnings would be poor.
“Typically, high-multiple stocks, such as biotechs and technology stocks get clipped badly during such times,” Manley said.
