Post No. 3,086 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17749.31 down 145.91 or 0.82%  from Thursday's close of 17895.22. For the week the Dow was down 145.91 or 0.08% from last Friday's close of 17856.78. Of the Dow components    7 gained, Pfizer and Walmart were unchanged  and 21  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 36 cents or 0.88%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $4.55 and percentage-wise was  IBM down 2.34%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.70 unchanged  from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 15.83).  Friday's P/E estimate is 16.65 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.65 (year ago it was 14.75) and  Friday's dividend yield is 2.27 up from  Thursday's dividend yield of 2.26  (last year it was 2.22). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2763.85 down 22.72   from  Thursday's   numerator of 2786.57.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.13 down $1.76  from Thursday's  average closing price of $92.89.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.89  (WMT/XOM) down 27 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $83.16 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,272 ($278,657 - $276,385).

3/13/15 Fri. 4:55 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks suffered another bout of selling on Friday and the main indexes registered losses for a third straight week. The turbulent week was dominated by wild swings in currencies, with the dollar surging to multiyear highs against the euro as expectations rose for a rate hike by the middle of the year.
Oil prices fell nearly 10% over the week as the commodity had been hit hard due to a stronger dollar, reports of a supply glut and heightened output. Weaker-than-expected economic data added to the dour Wall Street mood. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.61%  closed 12.55 points or 0.6%, lower at 2,053 and lost 0.9% over the week. Energy sector stock led the decliners over the week, falling 2.8%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.82%  dropped 145.91 points, or 0.8%, to 17,749.31 and recorded a 0.6% loss over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.44%  ended the day down 21.53 points, or 0.4%, at 4,871.76 and lost 1.1% over the week.Investors grappled with mixed economic reports over the week. Friday’s producer prices report showed a surprise drop. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment slid in March, falling more than experts had forecast. Those less-than-stellar reports followed a report on Thursday showing a sharp fall in unemployment claims.
“Volatility in the stock market rose since the end of tapering last October, which we see as the first de facto tightening,” said Daniel Skelly, lead portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. “While we still see modest returns this year, likelihood of more choppy trades is high.”
Skelly noted that mixed economic picture, especially lack of wage growth, overall slack in the labor market and the fragile state of the rest of the world economy provide enough reasons for the Federal Reserve to be hesitant with an interest-rate increase this year. Regardless, Skelly thinks market reaction to the eventual hike will be measured. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, and although no rate changes are expected, investors will closely be watching Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s news conference for hints on how patient the central bank will be before tightening its monetary policy.

3/12/15 Thurs. 4:33 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks recorded the biggest gain in more than a month as expectations for a rate hike were pushed back following disappointing data on retail sales. Monthly sales at U.S. retailers fell for the third consecutive month in February, sparking concerns about consumers’ ability to keep the economic engine going. The gains propelled the S&P 500 and Dow industrials back into positive territory for the year. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.26%  closed 25.71 points, or 1.3%, higher at 2,065.95, with nine of its 10 main sectors finishing with gains. Financials led the way, with the sector gaining 2.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.47%  jumped 259.83 points, or 1.5%, to 17,895.22, with 26 of its 30 members ending in positive territory. It was the strongest daily rise for both the S&P and the Dow since Feb. 3.The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.89%  ended the day up 43.35 points, or 0.9%, at 4,893.29.Ahead of the opening bell, investors digested mixed economic data. Disappointing monthly retail sales gave investors hope that the Fed will stay accommodative for longer, pushing expectations for the rate hike further in the year, according to analysts.“Today’s bounce is indicative of a shift in expectations, namely that the Fed will delay rate hikes, given poor retails sales figures,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC.“Over the past several sessions markets traded poorly as investors came to grips with the idea that the Fed will begin the tightening sooner rather than later. That is the reason the dollar has been strengthening,” Greenhaus said.On Thursday, data showed retail sales slumped in February for the third month in a row, missing forecasts for a rise. Falling retail sales indicate that consumers aren't spending the windfall from lower energy prices. Weekly jobless claims slid after a recent spike, in a sign that the labor market is still improving at a healthy pace. Meanwhile, U.S. import prices climbed last month for the first time in nine months.Although the February monthly jobs report last Friday came in much stronger than expected, other indicators, such as inventories and factory orders, point to a slowdown. That has sparked a guessing game among investors about the timing of the first rate hike since 2006.
