Post No. 3,087 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times, & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17749.31 down 145.91 or 0.82% from Thursday's close of 17895.22. For the week the Dow was down 0.41%. 145.91 or 0.08% from last Friday's close of 17856.78. For the year the Dow is down . Of the Dow components 7 gained, Pfizer and Walmart were unchanged and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 36 cents or 0.88%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $4.55 and percentage-wise was IBM down 2.34%.
IBD pB8 "Stock indexes start ugly, then erase much of loss" by Paul Whitfield says stocks took a pounding Fri until a final hour rally reduced the damage as Friday's action was down in higher vol and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
WSJ pB5 "Stocks hurt by strong dollar" by Dan Strumpf, Corrie Driebusch says US stocks fell as a rising dollar sparked fresh worries about corporate earnings. Intel Thurs. lowered its rev outlook for 1Q by $1 bil.
Sat. NYT pB3 "Market slips for a 3rd week on drop in oil prices" by AP says the stock market was hit hard Fri capping a 3rd week of declines as investors reacted to a steep drop in oil prices & a jump in the value of the dollar. A higher dollar makes US exports more expense abroad. GE, Caterpillar and Deere fell more than the rest of the market.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.67 unchanged from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 15.79). Monday's P/E estimate is 16.67 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 16.65 (year ago it was 14.52) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.53 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.27 (last year it was 2.21). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2763.85 down 22.72 from Thursday's numerator of 2786.57. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.13 down $1.76 from Thursday's average closing price of $92.89. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.89 (WMT/XOM) down 27 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $83.16 (PG/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,272 ($278,657 - $276,385).
3/13/15 Fri. 4:55 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks suffered another bout of selling on Friday and the main indexes registered losses for a third straight week. The turbulent week was dominated by wild swings in currencies, with the dollar surging to multiyear highs against the euro as expectations rose for a rate hike by the middle of the year.
Oil prices fell nearly 10% over the week as the commodity had been hit hard due to a stronger dollar, reports of a supply glut and heightened output. Weaker-than-expected economic data added to the dour Wall Street mood. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.61% closed 12.55 points or 0.6%, lower at 2,053 and lost 0.9% over the week. Energy sector stock led the decliners over the week, falling 2.8%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.82% dropped 145.91 points, or 0.8%, to 17,749.31 and recorded a 0.6% loss over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.44% ended the day down 21.53 points, or 0.4%, at 4,871.76 and lost 1.1% over the week.Investors grappled with mixed economic reports over the week. Friday’s producer prices report showed a surprise drop. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment slid in March, falling more than experts had forecast. Those less-than-stellar reports followed a report on Thursday showing a sharp fall in unemployment claims.
“Volatility in the stock market rose since the end of tapering last October, which we see as the first de facto tightening,” said Daniel Skelly, lead portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. “While we still see modest returns this year, likelihood of more choppy trades is high.”
Skelly noted that mixed economic picture, especially lack of wage growth, overall slack in the labor market and the fragile state of the rest of the world economy provide enough reasons for the Federal Reserve to be hesitant with an interest-rate increase this year. Regardless, Skelly thinks market reaction to the eventual hike will be measured. The Federal Open Market Committee meets on Tuesday and Wednesday, and although no rate changes are expected, investors will closely be watching Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s news conference for hints on how patient the central bank will be before tightening its monetary policy.
