Post No. 3,097 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17959.03 down 117.16 or 0.65% from Wednesday's close of 18076.19. For the year the Dow is up 0.76%. Of the Dow components 5 gained, IBM was unchanged and 24 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Nike up 81 cents and percentage-wise was Merck up 0.97%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $2.35and percentage-wise was DuPont down 1.97%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks pull back after Wednesday's surge" by Dan Strumpf says US stocks fell afer the Fed spurred a sharp rally Thursday by striking a cautious note about the US economy. Shares of Apple fell 97 cents on its first day of trading on the Dow.
NYT pB7 "Another tumble in the price of oil leaves equities mostly lower" by AP says a drop in oil drove the market lower Thurs. Chevron, Exxon and other energy firms led stocks down. It was Apples first day on the Dow. Goldman Sachs took Visa's title as the most expensive stock on the Dow as Visa did a 4 for 1 stock split.
IBD pB3 "Stocks face resistance, but Faceboook breaks out" by Paul whitfield says Thursday's action was mixed in lower trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.41 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 17.11 (last year it was 16.05). Today's P/E estimate is 16.67 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.67 (year ago it was 14.52) and today's dividend yield is 2.26 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.21 (last year it was 2.18). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2796.51 down 18.24 from Wednesday's numerator of 2814.75. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.32 down 52 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $93.84. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.90 (WMT/XOM) down $1.01 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $84.91 (WMT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,824 ($281,475 - $279,651).
3/19/15 Thurs. 4:33 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks pulled back Thursday, taking a breather a day after a Federal Reserve-inspired rally that sent the S&P 500 to its highest close in two weeks. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.49% fell 10.23 points, or 0.5%, to settle at 2,089.27, as oil prices dropped and energy stocks XLE, +0.05% helped lead the way lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.65% fell 117.16 points, or nearly 0.7%, to end at 17,959.03. The blue-chip gauge had been down by as much as 142 points. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.19% resisted the negative trend, edging up by 9.55 points, or 0.2%, to close at 4,992.38. The tech-heavy index, which briefly traded above 5,000 on Thursday, has climbed for four straight sessions. The S&P and Dow’s modest declines followed a volatile session on Wednesday, when stocks erased early losses to finish markedly higher, with the Dow climbing 227 points. The Fed, as expected, dropped its pledge to remain “patient” about raising rates, but signaled a slower increase in interest rates than it foresaw just a few months ago. “So in the end, while the Fed remains data dependent, the data now seems to be saying ‘it depends,’” said Sam Stovall, equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in a note. But Stovall also suggested his outfit’s expectations for the year haven’t changed much: “We maintain our year-end S&P 500 target of 2,250 as well as our expectation for elevated market volatility.”Thursday’s economic news: Before the open, a weekly report on jobless claims was a bit weaker than expected, and stock futures maintained their losses after its release. First-time jobless claims for the week ended March 14 came in at 291,000, while economists polled by MarketWatch had expected 290,000.The stock market also had a muted reaction to a weaker-than-anticipated figure for the Philadelphia Fed’s manufacturing index.Individual movers: Apple Inc. AAPL, -0.12% grabbed the spotlight as it made its debut as a Dow Jones Industrial Average component. Shares closed down 0.8% after rising at the open. Transocean Ltd. RIG, -7.15% was the S&P 500’s biggest decliner, sliding 7.1% after the offshore driller said it expects to book an after-tax charge of between $300 million and $325 million as it disposes of four rigs.Nucor Corp. NUE, -0.09% was the S&P’s second-biggest decliner, losing 6.4% after the steel giant issued a warning about its first-quarter results.Lennar Corp. LEN, -0.14% closed lower by 0.1%, erasing an early advance that came after the home builder reported earnings and revenue that beat expectations. Other markets: The dollar recouped much of its post-Fed losses, with the ICE dollar index DXY, -0.08% showing a sizable gain. The greenback had dropped against its rivals after Wednesday’s Fed announcement, sliding to its lowest level against the euro in eight days. The euro EURUSD, +0.08% moved sharply lower Thursday, as attention reverted back to negotiations between Greece and its creditors, with a meeting on the sidelines of this week’s eurozone summit. European stock markets ended mostly higher, keying off the Fed optimism. The Fed statement came out after markets in Europe closed, making Thursday’s session the first chance for that region’s investors to react to the news. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 UKX, +0.25% finished at a record high. Asian markets closed mixed, with stocks in Shanghai SHCOMP, +0.14% extending a seven-day winning streak. Gold settled higher, while crude oil prices settled lower.
