MarketWatch Monday 6/29/11 4:39 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Wednesday extended their winning run to a third straight day as Greece approved debt-reduction measures and Wall Street prepped for closing the books on the second quarter. “The market has been rallying, in theory at least, on Greece getting financial aid and trying to work its way out of the debt rash that they’re in,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. But the string of gains has come without much participation behind it, added Nolte, who noted that trading volume has been low “even by recent standards.” Therefore, he attributes Wall Street’s rise as more to do with a “corrective rebound in front of a three-day weekend, along with end-of-quarter window dressing.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 72.73 points, or 0.6%, to 12,261.42, with 24 of its 30 components trading higher. Bank of America Corp. led the gains. The blue-chip index is off 0.5% from the end of the first quarter, and off 2.5% for the month. A draft ruling on debit-card fees that won’t cut into bank revenues as much as feared sent shares of Visa Inc. up 15% and MasterCard Inc. shares up 11%. Shares of the nation’s largest bank climbed 2.6% after it agreed to pay $8.5 billion to settle disputes over mortgages gone bad and held in securities purchased by BlackRock Inc. and other investors. Read more about Bank of America’s settlement. Off 2.8% for June and 1.4% for the second quarter, the S&P 500 Index climbed 10.74 points, or 0.8%, to 1,307.41, with financials and natural-resource companies faring the best among its 10 industry groups. Technology companies lagged. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 3.44 points, or 0.4%, to 2,740.49, readying it for a 1.5% quarterly decline and a drop of 3.3% for June. For every share that fell, more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 913 million shares traded. In Washington, President Barack Obama held a news conference to talk about ongoing negotiations to reduce the nation’s deficit. The comments followed an International Monetary Fund warning that a failure by U.S. lawmakers to reach an agreement on raising the U.S. borrowing limit soon could hit the still-fragile global economy with a “severe shock.” U.S. stocks wobbled then recovered after an industry group reported home sales rebounded 8.2% in May from the previous month.
“While a positive data point relative to expectations, the index is still at the second-lowest level since last November, and we need to see how many of these contracts turn into closings as bank-mortgage approval has become a much tougher process,” said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,046 ($161,048 - $162,094).
MarketWatch Wednesday 6/29/11 4:39 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Wednesday extended their winning run to a third straight day as Greece approved debt-reduction measures and Wall Street prepped for closing the books on the second quarter.

WSJ pC5 "DJIA chips away at June losses" by Brendan Conway says US stocks advanced for the 3rd straight session, as investors cheered a Greek austerity package & fin'l stocks jumped after a major settlement on mortgage-backed securities. The Dow rose 72.73 points, capping its biggest 3 day gain since March. bank of America climbed 32 cents and other bank stocks gained ground after it reached an $8.5 bil agreement with holders of soured mortgage backed securities. The pact was viewed as removing a drag on the shares. Bank of America is charted under Good News.
Fin Times p28 "Fin'l sector eturns to form as big investment banks lead the way" by Michael Stothard says fin'l stocks saw some of the strongest gains in an upbeat session on Wall St as the big indices continued to bounce off some technical lows last week and sentiment was lifted by news that the Greek parliament had passed a package of austerity measures.
NYT pB8 "US & European markes rise on optimism over Greek vote" by Christine Hauser says a relief rally swept the European & American markets atfer an early Wed vote by the Greek Parliament to approve an austerity plan.
USA Today p1B "Greek austerity moves advance" by Gary Strauss says global markets rallied Wed after Greece's parliament backed sweeping austerity measures to avoid bankruptcy.
As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E is 13.95 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.87 (year ago it was 14.21); today's P/E estimate is 12.20 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.20 (year ago it was 12.60), and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.44 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.84). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,620.94 up 10.46 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,610.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.03 up 0.35 from Tuesday's average closing price of $53.68. The median closing price of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.68 (AXP/JPM) up 1.00 from Tuesday's median closing price of $44.68. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $93.11 +0.09 0.1% 3,064,527 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.14 +0.32 2.96% 300,596,782 NYSE.

Post No. 1,094 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of June 20, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of June 20, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,261.42 up 72.73 or 0.6% from Tuesday's close of 12,188.69. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was American Express AXP $50.92 +1.10 2.21% 9,816,107 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $11.14 +0.32 2.96% 300,596,782 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $103.36 -0.48 0.46% 8,630,805 NYSE and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.62 -0.18 0.7% 65,980,110 NASDAQ-GS.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E is 13.87 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.70 (year ago it was 14.35); today's P/E estimate is 12.20 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.20 (year ago it was 12.60), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.46 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.49 (last year it was 2.81).
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,046 ($161,048 - $162,094).

The following are excerpts from Wednesday morning's Blog.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,188.69 up 145.3 or 1.21% from Monday's close of 12,043%. For the year the Dow is up 5.28%. Of the 30 Dow components 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $103.84 +3.04 3.02% 7,850,880 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $39.54 -0.34 0.85% 41,481,667 NYSE.
WSJ pC5 "DJIA's best day in 2 months" by Brendan Conways ays Blue chip stocks posted their biggest gain in more than 2 months, as signs of progress in Greece's debt crisis sparked a broad market rally. Caterpillar led blue chips as it rose $3.04, reflecting investors' increased willingness to take on risk, rather than any company specific news. McDonald's rose 2.03 and Home Depot added 86 cents. Microsoft gained 60 cents building on Monday's gains as it unveiled an online version of its Office software suite.
Fin Times p22 "Nike's resurgence boosts hopes that broader rally will gather pace" by Michael Stothard says Nike led the consumer discretionary sector higher after it reported strong quarterly earnings, while the wider markets saw another positive session leaving some to ask whether US equities were now in the early stages of a larger rally.
NYT pB8 "Home prices turn upward, and markets follow" by AP says after weeks of worries about the economy pulled stocks down, indexes have risen sharply for 2 days in a row.
USA Today p4B "Greece outlook, Nike profit help markets extend gains" by Bloomberg says stocks rose amid optimism that European nations will take action to prevent a Greek default and after Nike beat earnings estimates. Caterpillar, ExxonMobil & Alcoa added $3.04, $1.71 and 37 cents, pacing gains in firms most tied to economic growth. Home Depot climbed 86 cents after the largest US home improvement retailer said it is targeting $3.5 bil in share repurchases for '11.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,610.48 up 11.25 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,591.23.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.68 up 0.64 from Monday's average closing price of $53.04. The median closing price of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.68 (AXP/JPM) down 0.03 from Monday's median closing price of $44.71. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $93.02 +0.77 0.83% 2,720,557 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.82 -0.03 0.28% 108,194,721 NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,125 ($161,048 - 159,123).
MarketWatch Monday 6/28/11 4:58 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks rallied for a second day Tuesday, with the Dow industrials polishing off their best performance since April 20 on hope for a resolution to Greece’s debt crisis. “We’re still Greek hostages basically,” David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds, said of Wall Street’s fixation on coming votes Wednesday and Thursday in Parliament, which is being asked to approve controversial austerity measures as a condition of receiving further European aid. Read more about the ongoing Greece saga. “I essentially buy what Ben Bernanke was selling last week,” Kelly said of the Federal Reserve chairman’s view that the U.S. economy would strengthen in the second half of the year. Down 1.1% for the nearly ended quarter, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 145.13 points, or 1.2%, to 12,188.69, with 26 of its 30 components gaining, led by Caterpillar Inc. CAT -0.10% , up 3%. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index SPX +1.29% climbed 16.57 points, or 1.3%, to 1,296.67, leaving it off 2.2% for the second quarter. Shares of Nike Inc. NKE -0.06% led advancers, up almost 10% a day after the athletic-shoe maker reported fourth-quarter results that beat estimates. Read more about increased demand for the retailer’s wares. With only two days remaining in the second quarter, dividend payments are on target for their biggest year-to-year quarterly gain since the first quarter of 2005, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Indices. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +1.53% gained 41.03 points, or 1.5%, to 2,729.31, leaving it off for the three-month period ending Thursday. For every stock that fell, four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 804 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 3.4 billion. Commodities also advanced, with crude-oil futures nearing $93 a barrel and gold futures back above $1,500 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Treasury prices fell, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR +3.48% used in determining rates on mortgages and other consumer loans rising to 3.041%. “Eventually long-term interest rates are going to go higher, a stronger economy will push rates up,“ said J.P. Morgan’s Kelly. “People think they can’t lose money in the Treasury market and they can,” said Kelly, who added that bond investors have grown complacent during “the mother of all bull markets.” Wall Street offered virtually no reaction to a report showing a drop in consumer sentiment in June. Separately, a 20-city index tracking changes in U.S. home prices gained in April from March.
“All eyes remain on Greece,” noted Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, after the Conference Board reported a drop in confidence this month.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,046 ($161,048 - $162,094).
