The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,089.96 down 61.3 or 0.5% from Friday's close of 12,151.26. Of the 30 Dow components 7 gained and 23 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies UTX $83.71 +0.47 0.56% 5,464,088 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $99.68 -1.32 1.31% 6,892,717 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $10.83 -0.45 3.99% 210,445,953 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E is 13.82 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 13.93 (year ago it was 14.44); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.40 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 12.36), and the most recent dividend yield is 2.45 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.43 (last year it was 2.70). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,597.44 down 8.1 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,605.54. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.25 down $0.27 from Friday's average closing price of $53.52. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.68 (AXP/JPM) down 0.75 from Friday's median closing price of $45.43. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $61.06 -0.12 0.2% 2,816,054 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.83 -0.45 3.99% 210,445,953 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $816 ($160,560 - $159,744).

MarketWatch Monday 6/6/11 4:13 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks extended their losing streak to a fourth straight session Monday, pulled lower by falling financial and energy stocks, and a turn lower in Apple Inc. shares. The Dow Jones Industrial average ended down 61.3 points, or 0.5%, to 12,089.96, with all but seven of 30 components lower. The S&P 500 fell 13.99 points, or 1.1%, to 1,286.17, closing below 1,300 for the first time since March 23. Energy and financial subsectors led declines with 2% losses each as oil ended below $100 a barrel and banks were pressured by worries over capital requirements. The Nasdaq Composite ended down 30.22 points, or 1.1%, to 2,702.56, weighed by a 1.6% drop in Apple.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,151.26 down 97.26 or 0.79% from Thursday's close of 12,248.55. For the week the Dow is down 2.3%. For the year the Dow is up 4.96%. Of the 30 Dow components only Walmart gained, Travelers was unchanged and 28 declined. The only and therfore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Walmart WMT $53.66 +0.11 0.21% 13,178,276 NYSE. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.52 down $0.45 from Thursday's average closing price of $53.97. For the week, the major indexes lost more than 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 97.29 points, or 0.8%, to 12,151.26, with Caterpillar Inc. and United Technologies Corp. shares weighing the most. The S&P 500 lost 12.78 points, or 1%, to 1,300.16, with telecom and tech sectors posting the steepest losses. The Nasdaq Composite fell 40.53 points, or 1.5%, to 2,732.78. For the week, the Dow average lost 2.3%, its fifth straight week of losses, for its longest loss streak since 2004. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also lost 2.3%.
