Post No. 1,069 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 23, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of May 24, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,076.11 up 123.14 or 1.03% from Monday's close of 11,952.97. For the year the Dow is up 4.31%. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $97.86 +2.42 2.54% 8,464,634 NYSE and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $34.75 +1.24 3.7% 17,524,330 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $10.8 -0.17 1.55% 172,379,856 NYSE.

WSJ pC1 "Blue chips break cycle of gloom" by Jonathan Cheng says investors' dour mood broke as economic indicators in the US & China topped lackluster expectations. Cash flew out of the safety of Treasury bonds & into stocks.

Fin Times p26 "Best Buy spearheads retail advance in broadly positive trading session" by Michael Stothard says healthy earnings results from Best Buy lifted the retail sector, while the wider markets saw their best session in nearly 2 months after stronger than expected economic data convinced traders to buy into a depressed market. Hewlett-Packard gained 0.2% as it announced the departure of 2 senior officers in a management shake up. Intel added 2% after announcing a partnership with Entropic Communications to develop an advanced video gateway.

USA Today p4B "Stocks rise on US retail sales, China industrial production" by Bloomberg says stocks rallied Tues & the S&P 500 advanced the most in almost 2 months.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E is 13.74 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.60 (year ago it was 15.13); today's P/E estimate is 12.01 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.01 (year ago it was 12.56), and today's dividend yield is 2.48 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,595.61 up 16.27 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,579.34. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.19 up o.55 from Monday's average closing price of $52.64. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.88 (AXP/JPM) up 0.56 from Monday's median closing price of $44.96. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.59 +1.29 1.41% 2,790,260 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.8 -0.17 1.55% 172,379,856 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,627 ($159,561 - $157,920).

MarketWatch Tuesday 6/14/11 5:02 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks had their best day this month on Tuesday, as investors rushed in after May retail sales topped estimates and Best Buy Co. also beat quarterly profit and sales expectations. “The retail number, which was lousy, was better than expected, and Best Buy’s earnings are a strong indication that second-quarter profits will be pretty good,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. “Analysts expect roughly 20% earnings growth — I think that’s irrational — and investors are expecting 0% earnings growth. The truth lies somewhere in between,” he added regarding the quarterly earnings ahead. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 123.14 points, or 1.03%, to 12,076.11, its best one-day percentage gain since May 31 and its highest closing level since Thursday. All but six of the Dow’s 30 components rose, led by a 4.5% gain in Home Depot Inc. shares. Bank stocks fell, led lower by Bank of America Corp. The S&P 500 Index advanced 16.04 points, or 1.3%, to 1,287.87, with a 2% rally in the energy sector pacing advances for all 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 39.03 points, or 1.5%, to 2,678.72. Stocks maintained strong gains after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the U.S. debt ceiling should not be used as leverage by politicians. All news aside, after six weeks in a row of declines, the stock market was arguably undervalued as individual investors were becoming very pessimistic, according to Hugh Johnson, chairman of Hugh Johnson Advisors. He cited the weekly sentiment survey by the American Association of Individual Investors, which on Wednesday had a bearish take from 47.7% of its members, up 14.2% from the week earlier. An extended downward trend in equities and a dour mood among individual investors is “usually a combination for some kind of bounce, and I think professional traders saw that,” said Johnson. “Nobody has a lot of confidence, but when the market stabilized yesterday, that gave a lot of traders the courage to step in.” Equities found early support after the government said retail sales dipped a less-than-projected 0.2% in May, and excluding auto sales, climbed 0.3%. Read more on May retail sales. “We knew auto sales were terrible in the month of May, but away from automobile sales, things were not as bad as we thought. So if you have any money left, if you had any courage at all, now is the time,” added Johnson of the rally in equities. “I think everybody kind of knew that.” Separate data had wholesale prices up last month by the smallest amount in 10 months. Best Buy shares rallied 4.6% after the consumer-electronics retailer reported a first-quarter profit that beat analysts’ forecasts. Gains in U.S. stocks extended a rally in equity markets in Asia and Europe after Chinese data on industrial output and retail sales showed the economy still growing at a quick pace. Crude futures /quotes/zigman/2075821 CL1N +0.11% quit a two-day losing streak to end up 2.1% at $99.37 a barrel.
