Post No. 1,077 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 23, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of May 24, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Investor Business Daily, The Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,004.36 up 42.84 or 0.36% from Thursday's close of 11,961.52. For the year the Dow is up 3.69%. For the week the Dow was up 42.84 or 0.36% from last Friday's close of 11,951.91. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $164.44 +1.77 1.09% 7,153,383 NYSE and percentage-wise was AT&T T $30.77 +0.34 1.12% 27,914,850 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $99.17 -0.26 0.26% 12,037,162 NYSE and percentage-wise was Intel INTC $21.19 -0.23 1.07% 96,517,794 NASDAQ-GS.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stock indexes end mixed, give back most of gains" by Paul Whitfield says stocks on Fri kept to a recent bearish pattern, starting strong & then unwinding much or all of the gains later in the day. Friday's action was mixed in greater volume and the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E is 13.66 up from Friday's trailing P/E of 13.61 (year ago it was 15.19); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.15 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.01 (year ago it was 12.90), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.65). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,586.13 up 5.67 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,580.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.87 up 0.19 from Thursday's average closing price of $52.68. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.43 (AXP/JPM) down 0.95 from Thursday's median closing price of $44.38. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $91.78 +0.20 0.22% 3,764,214 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.68 +0.08 0.75% 116,777,295 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $567 ($158,613 - $157,198).

MarketWatch Friday 6/17/11 5:23 pm by Austen Sherman says US stocks posted their first weekly gain since April on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Dow industrials ending moderately higher in the face of worries about Europe’s debt crisis and a slowdown in the U.S. economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36% ended the day at 12,004.36, up 42.84 points on the day, and 52.45 points for the week. The index had fallen every week since the end of April. The S&P 500 SPX +0.30% added 3.86 points Friday, or 0.3%, to end at 1,271.50. That’s just 0.52 point higher than its close a week ago, but it was enough to break a six-week losing streak. U.S. stocks, recently roiled by prospects of a Greek debt default, may find their own rescue package in second-quarter earnings, according to portfolio manager Michael Cuggino. Greece’s debt crisis dominated headlines during the week. As trading wound down Friday, a fresh worry emerged as Moody’s Investors Service put Italy’s bond ratings on review for possible downgrade, citing challenges in economic growth. Also making for some choppy trading, what’s known as quadruple witching — when stock-index futures, single-stock futures, equity options and stock-index options expire -- was in play Friday. “It’s typical of quadruple witching to see this volatility, and a while ago Moody’s announced that Italy is up for a possible downgrade, causing some selling as the euro sold off,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist of Avalon Partners.
“We came back up a little so I think it has most to do with the last hour of trading on quadruple witching day,” he said. Stocks started the session with strong gains, boosted by talks between France and Germany on a possible debt deal for Greece and some strength in one of the day’s economic indicators. The Dow industrials snapped a six-week losing streak, with investors pushing up shares as hopes intensified for a resolution to the Greek debt crisis. Ahead of the U.S. market open, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a joint press conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy that they want a quick solution to the Greek debt situation and will work to preserve the stability of the euro. They referred to a “Vienna-style” deal, which some analysts said could be a way to prevent or at least delay a default of Greece’s debt. Risks of a Greek sovereign default, which could hike losses at exposed European banks and ripple across the global financial sector, contributed to six straight weeks of losses as of last Friday. Uncertainty about a resolution will likely dog U.S. markets, even with a stronger show of cooperation among European leaders in recent days.“The market will turn higher only if clarity emerges in Greece. It remains to be seen if the crisis can be contained short of default,” said Michael Yoshikami, president and chief investment strategist at YCMNet Advisors, in an email interview. That uncertainty also capped gains for the day.“Investors are concerned about risk going into the weekend,“ Yoshikami said.Earlier stocks weathered conflicting U.S. economic reports. A report from the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters showed a survey of consumer sentiment fell to 71.8 in early June, worse than expected, but the Conference Board‘s index of leading economic indicators grew a surprisingly strong 0.8% in May. Read more on leading economic indicators. The “University Michigan confidence report was bad, but a lot of that was expected because of the drop in the market,” according to Burt White, chief investment officer for LPL Financial.“The great news was May’s leading indicators were booming and that should squash double-dip fears. The market has figured out that this is a short-term blip, a good old-fashioned soft spot, a midcycle slowdown, and on the other end is another acceleration,” he said.Within the S&P 500, 7 of 10 industry groups showed gains, led by telecoms and financials. Energy, tech and materials stocks ended lower.Oil futures ended down 2% at $93.01 a barrel, the lowest since mid- February, beset by worries over demand as developed nations’ demand slows, and as investors backed away after steep losses in the prior session. Read more on oil futures. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.28% fell 7.22 points, or 0.3%, to 2,616.5, its fifth straight week of losses. News on Greece also overshadowed analysts’s downgrades of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. RIMM -0.04% , whose shares tumbled 21%. On the Dow, AT&T Inc. T +0.16% , Microsoft MSFT +0.08% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM -0.12% shares led gainers, while Intel Corp. INTC -1.07% and Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO +0.07% shares led decliners.
