WSJ pC1 "Oil surprise roils markets" by Jonathan Cheng says just as the Fed Res prepares to turn off one spigot, members of the Int'l Energy Agency turned on another as it released more oil into the market which drove crude prices to their lowest in 4 months. This sent stocks down sharply and gave the dollar a lift.

Fin Times p22 "Fed's downbeat outlook blights energy & banking stocks" by Michael Stothard says energy & fin'l stocks led the losses in a volatile session on Wall St as traders continued to digest the downbeat assessment of the US economy given by the Fed Res late in the prior session & also worried about a disappointing rise in unemployment claims. Industrial stocks also suffered from a "risk off" trade. Boeing was down 1.2%.

NYT pB1 "Stocks dive, then rise on a day of volatility" by Chris Hauser says Eruopeand ebt troubles & signs of a sluggish economy in the US unsettled investors as stocks fell sharply early, pushing he Dow down 2% before it rallied on new hopes for a Greek austerity plan.

USA T p4B "Markets sink early, but manage to reduce losses" by Bloomberg says stocks slumped sending the S&P down a 2nd day as concern grew that Europe's debt crisis will hurt banks & an increase in jobless claims added to signs the economy is slowing.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E is 13.71 down from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.78 (year ago it was 14.76); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.90), and today's dividend yield is 2.49 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.73). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,592.18 down 8.25 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,600.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.07 down 0.28 from yesterday's average closing price of $53.35. The median closing price of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.59 (AXP/JPM) down 0.68 from Wednesday's median closing price of $45.27. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.28 -0.52 0.56% 3,515,817 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.749 -0.041 0.38% 154,977,138 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $825 ($160,043 - $159,218).

MarketWatch Thursday 6/23/11 4:11 pm by Tom Bemis says US stocks staged a dramatic rebound late in Thursday's session to end mixed on reports Greek authorities have agreed to a new 5-year austerity plan to avoid a sovereign default. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% to end at 12,050.15 with 28 stocks in the index falling and just two higher. Earlier the index had plunged more than 200 points as a plan to release petroleum from global reserves hammered oil giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron both major components of the Dow. In the broader markets, the S&P 500 index ended down 0.28% at 1,283.52 after earlier bouncing off its 200-day moving average at 1,262. The NASDAQ Composite Index ended higher, adding 0.7% to close at 2,686.75.
