As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E is 13.75 down from Monday's trailing P/E of 13.82 (year ago it was 14.27); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 12.40 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.40 (year ago it was 12.36), and the most recent dividend yield is 2.46 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.45 (last year it was 2.8270). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,597.44 down 8.1 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,605.54. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.25 down $0.27 from Friday's average closing price of $53.52. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.68 (AXP/JPM) down 0.75 from Friday's median closing price of $45.43. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $61.06 -0.12 0.2% 2,816,054 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.83 -0.45 3.99% 210,445,953 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $816 ($160,560 - $159,744).

MarketWatch Monday 6/6/11 4:13 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks extended their losing streak to a fourth straight session Monday, pulled lower by falling financial and energy stocks, and a turn lower in Apple Inc. shares. The Dow Jones Industrial average ended down 61.3 points, or 0.5%, to 12,089.96, with all but seven of 30 components lower. The S&P 500 fell 13.99 points, or 1.1%, to 1,286.17, closing below 1,300 for the first time since March 23. Energy and financial subsectors led declines with 2% losses each as oil ended below $100 a barrel and banks were pressured by worries over capital requirements. The Nasdaq Composite ended down 30.22 points, or 1.1%, to 2,702.56, weighed by a 1.6% drop in Apple.
