Post No. 1,091 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of June 20, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of June 20, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,043 up 109.98 or 0.91% from Friday's close of 11,934.58. For the year the Dow is up 4.03%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $167.56 +2.49 1.51% 3,893,286 NYSE and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.2 +0.90 3.7% 84,087,489 NASDAQ-GS. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont DD $51.77 -0.19 0.37% 5,282,123 NYSE.
WSJ pC5 "Blue chips rise; first gain in 4" by Steven Russolillo says US stocks closed sharply higher snapping a 3 day losing streak, as the tech sector surged & fin'l stocks jumped on banking capital requirements that were less onerous than expected. Microsoft & Bank of America led the Dow. Bank of America and Microsoft are charted under Good News, BofA because the capital rules aren't as bad as feared and Microsoft due to its introduction on Tues of its cloud version of Office that ramps up the copetition with Google & VMware. JPMorgan gained 39 cents.
Fin Times p22 "Fin'ls lead as US shrugs off weak consumer spending data" by Michael Stothard says Wall St kicked off the week in positive territory despite some lacklustre consumer spending data as the big indices bounced off key tech support levels after nearly 2 straight months of losses. The fin'l sector which has been one of the worst performing in recent months, falling 13% from its last cyclical high in Feb, saw some of the strongest gains in the session.
NYT pB8 "Markets move higher on optimism about Greece" by Reuters says Wall St led global stocks higher & the euro rallied against the dollar on increasing investor confidence that the Greek Parliament would pass an unpopular austerity plan and as Frenc banks outlined an agreement to roll over Greek debt.
USA Today p5B "Stocks rise as fears about new bank regs are eased" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced as regulators issued capital rules to safeguard the global fin'l system & tech firms rallied.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E is 13.70 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.58 (year ago it was 14.74); today's P/E estimate is 12.20 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.20 (year ago it was 12.60), and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.49 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.73). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,591.23 up 14.32 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,576.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.04 up 0.48 from Friday's average closing price of $52.56. The median closing price of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.71 (AXP/JPM) up 0.79 from Friday's median closing price of $43.92. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.25 +1.36 1.5% 2,752,707 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10. NYSE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,432 ($159,123- $157,691).
MarketWatch Monday 6/27/11 4:28 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks surged Monday to their first winning session in four as investors looked to the end of a quarter and cheered a French proposal to help debt-riddled Greece. “The heads of Europe, the ECB [European Central Bank], understand the magnitude of what is going on, and people smarter than me are going to figure out how to work it out,” said Gary Flam, managing director and portfolio manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors. “We’re placing our bets on what we think will happen, a solution short of calamity. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 108.98 points, or 0.9%, to 12,043.56, with all but four of its 30 components rising. Microsoft Corp. shares led the gainers, up 3.7%. The software giant is expected to announce a version of its Office software Tuesday that is accessible via Internet. Also lifting the blue-chip index, Bank of America Corp. shares rose 3.1% after Rochdale Securities LLC analyst Richard Bove called it undervalued, saying shares would rise as earnings overcome costs tied to troubled mortgages. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 11.64 points, or 0.9%, to 1,280.09, with technology companies faring the best among 10 industry groups. Consumer-discretionary shares also rallied, led by a 4.5% rise in Amazon.com Inc. after Morgan Stanley put the online retailer on its list of “best ideas.” Bank shares also advanced, lifted in part by relief that new capital rules issued during the weekend to protect the global financial system were not more burdensome. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 35.39 points, or 1.3%, to 2,688.28. For every stock that fell, more than two gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 835 million shares. French banks proposed a plan to help Greece avoid default on its debts by allowing for slower repayment of funds lent to Greece. Lawmakers in Greece were expected to vote later this week on austerity measures that have to be approved before the nation can get more rescue funds to help it avert default. One analyst, however, played down the developments overseas as a reason for Monday’s rally, saying much remains up in the air about Greece. “A lot of people are winding up the quarter right now with a ton of cash on the books, and, like it or not, they have to put it to work,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. “The market got oversold, and now we have quarter-end window dressing,” Pavlik added. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday struck down a California law banning sales of violent videogames to minors. Microsoft was among those challenging the law, which had not yet been enforced. Friday had seen Wall Street falling for a third straight session on concern about Italian banks as well as Greece’s debt troubles. “It’s probably a relief rally [Monday],” offered Michael Gibbs, director of equity strategy at Morgan Keegan. “There was a little news out of the Greek situation over the weekend, as France threw in a plan there to get the private sector involved.” The U.S. government on Monday reported that, when adjusted for inflation, consumer spending declined in May. It also revised April’s figures downward, illustrating the first drop since January 2010. After the close, athletic-clothing retailer Nike Inc. reported results from its fourth quarter.
