MarketWatch Tuesday 6/7/11 4:30 pm by Steven Russolillo says US stocks dropped for a fifth straight day as investors turned downbeat late in the session following comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 19.15 points, or 0.2%, at 12,070.81. The blue-chip index earlier rose as much as 89 points.
As the Fed confronts the end of its QE2 policy at a time of weakness, one central banker says no fresh support will be coming from the central bank. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index dropped 1.23 points, or 0.1%, to 1,284.94, led lower by the technology and telecom sectors. The technology-oriented Nasdaq Composite dropped 1 point to 2701. The late-day reversal came after Bernanke said the U.S. economy should pick back up in the second half of 2011 despite recent signs of weakness. He also added the recovery two years after the end of the recession remains “uneven,” with labor-market conditions troubled.
While he said “accommodative monetary policies are still needed,” Bernanke also gave no indication the Fed was planning to roll out a third special stimulus, or quantitative easing program. “The market is not buying what Bernanke is selling,” said Keith Bliss, senior vice president at Cuttone & Company, a brokerage on the New York Stock Exchange floor. “He’s not wowing the crowd.” Stocks had risen earlier as investors snapped up beaten-down stocks after the S&P 500 closed below 1,300 for the first time in two and a half months Monday, and a $3.4 billion hostile bid for Temple-Inland buoyed sentiment.
