Post No. 1,141 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,132.49 down 10.75 or 0.09% from Friday's close of 12,143.24. Of the 30 Dow components 9 gained and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $100.72 -1.93 1.95% 12,803,621 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $180.75 -1.10 0.6% 5,776,146 NYSE and percentage-wise was Merck MRK $33.44 -0.69 2.02% 25,234,388 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.62 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.91 (year ago it was 14.18); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.57 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 12.70), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.49 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,603.06 down 1.42 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,604.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.43 down 0.05 from Friday's average closing price of $53.48. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.23 (AXP/JPM) down 0.02 from Friday's median closing price of $45.25. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $142 ($160,448 - $160,306).
MarketWatch Monday 8/1/11 3:38 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rebounded from steep losses in the final hour of trading Monday, with investors on uncertain footing before lawmakers vote on an agreement to lift the federal borrowing limit. Still, the Dow remained on track for its longest losing stretch in over a year after data had factory activity near a standstill in July. “The surprisingly disappointing manufacturing report fueled a growing concern that the ‘soft patch’ may be with us for a while,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. Wall Street’s decline had the blue-chip index extending losses into a new month, after losing 271 points, or 2.2%, in July, its third consecutive monthly decline. Friday’s finish marked a sixth consecutive down session for the Dow, its longest stretch of losses since early June. If the blue-chip average ends with a loss Monday, it will be the first seven-day loss streak since one ending July 2, 2010. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined 7.89 points, or 0.6%, to 1,284.39, with health-care stocks hardest hit among 10 industry groups after Medicare said it would trim payment rates to nursing-home facilities after an unexpected spike in 2011. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 21.17 points, or 0.8%, to 2,735.22. Decliners remained just ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 757 million shares traded as of 3:20 p.m. Lawmakers were expected to vote later in the day on the deal to hike the nation’s borrowing ceiling that would also include more than $2.4 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years. “The investment community is understandably relieved that a deal has apparently been reached, but a few questions hang in the balance,” said Kevin Giddis, fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan. The agreement, seen as passing the Democratic-led Senate but facing a rougher road in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives, had investors still fretting about the risk to the U.S. triple-A sovereign debt rating. “Both left-wing Democrats and right-wing Republicans may vote against the measure, suggesting that, if the deal is not passed, it will be hard to find a modification which could get through Congress,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Equities turned heels on an opening rally after data illustrated slowing growth in the manufacturing sector in July, with the Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing gauge falling to a two-year low. Treasury prices gained, pushing the yield on the benchmark 10-year note as low as 2.7155%, the lowest level since November. Read more on bonds. Insurer Allstate Corp. reported less of a second-quarter loss than anticipated, while Humana Inc. hiked its 2011 profit outlook. “Even in a slow-moving economic recovery, corporations have been very successful in building their profitability,” said J.P. Morgan Funds’ Kelly of quarterly results.

MarketWatch Friday 7/29/11 5:32 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks slid Friday, sending two major indexes to their worst week in more than a year, as Congress prolonged the uncertainty over the nation’s debt ceiling. “The debt issue is hurting the economy,” said Aaron Smith, senior economist at Moody’s Analytics. “Confidence is dissolving more rapidly than the data and markets would suggest.” Even as the debt-limit crisis dominates U.S. market attention, next week's news calendar is packed with major corporate earnings reports and key economic indicators. The White House said President Barack Obama would consider signing a short-term extension of the debt ceiling if it would give lawmakers time to complete a longer-term deal.
But spokesman Jay Carney said the administration still believes a deal can be done to raise the borrowing limit by Aug. 2.“I don’t think Tuesday is as big of a deal as say midmonth; interest payments are due on the 15th, so if we didn’t have a deal by then it could get ugly pretty fast,” added Smith at Moody’s Analytics. Recovering from a 156-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.79% ended down 96.87 points, or 0.8%, to 12,143.24. The blue-chip benchmark lost 4.2% from a week ago, its worst week in percentage terms since early July 2010. It’s fallen 2.2% for the month of July, its third straight monthly loss. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.65% declined 8.39 points, or 0.7%, to 1,292.28, with a drop in energy and materials leading declines for all 10 industry groups. For the week, the index of large-cap U.S. companies has lost 3.9% — also its worst stretch in just over a year — and 2.2% for the month. Despite the ongoing nervousness over the debt negotiations, Mike Santoli and David Callaway argue that Treasurys are still some of the safest investments there are. The Nasdaq Composite Index ended down 9.87 points, or 0.4%, to 2,756.38. It’s lost 3.6% for the week and 0.6% for the month.
For every stock that rose about two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.2 billion shares traded hands. In the week ahead, “the debt-ceiling debate is issue number one, and then the attention will quickly shift to the jobs report on Friday, we’re thinking we’ll see some improvement,” said Smith at Moody’s Analytics of the nonfarm payrolls report for July. “The concerning thing is if we do get a weak number, the July numbers are going to predate the most intense debt-ceiling driven caution on the part of companies that we’ve seen,” said Smith of reluctance on the part of cash-flush corporate America to hire, given the shaky climate.
Given the July employment data is based on a survey conducted fairly early in the month and the debt-ceiling dysfunction has ramped up in the past seven to 10 days, the “uncertainty this is creating will be fully reflected in August (payrolls) number, particularly if we don’t get a quick resolution in the next week,” Smith said.Stock investors also wrestled with a new report showcasing slower growth for the U.S. economy. On Thursday, the Commerce Department said gross domestic product expanded at a 1.3% rate in the second quarter, below the 1.6% forecast by economists. Separately, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan gauge of consumer sentiment fell in July to its lowest level since March 2009. The disappointing GDP report helped drive up Treasurys, as investors sought U.S. government debt as safe-havens — even as the prospect of a U.S. default loomed. Yields on benchmark 10-year Treasury notes tumbled 15 basis points to 2.8%. Yields move inversely to prices, and a basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.
Crude-oil futures fell $1.74 to end at $95.7 a barrel, while December gold futures gained $15 to finish at a record $1,631.20 an ounce. But stalled efforts to come to an agreement on hiking the nation’s debt ceiling overshadowed the day’s economic reports, with only four days to go before a threatened default according to a Treasury Department deadline. “We’re almost out of time,” said Obama in making another bid for compromise on the deficit and debt ceiling, arguing that while the House plan is moot and that both sides are not that far apart. On Capitol Hill, House Republicans planned a second attempt at passing Speaker John Boehner’s proposed debt legislation, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he had asked his minority counterpart Mitch McConnell to meet with him for a “good-faith” negotiation.
