A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, Sat's & Sun's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.59 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.44 (year ago it was 13.70); Sat's P/E estimate is 11.23 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 11.11 (year ago it was 12.02), and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.71 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.74 (last year it was 2.77). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,491.02 up 17.80 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,473.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.70 up $0.59 from Thursday's average closing price of $49.11. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.35 (AXP/JPM) up $0.39 from Thursday's median closing price of $41.96. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $80.01 +1.82 2.33% 5,384,581 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.76 +0.11 1.44% 421,643,553 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,780 ($149,102 - $147,330).
MarketWatch Thursday 8/26/11 4:38 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks finished sharply higher on Friday, with Wall Street tallying its first winning week in five, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled the economy is not in need of quick stimulus. “He didn’t say anything negative, he just didn’t have anything too great to cause anyone to ramp up growth forecasts. We’re left with, ‘we think the U.S. economy is going to improve’,” said Ken Tower, senior analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service.
In his speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Bernanke said the Federal Open Market Committee would consider its options at its next meeting in late September. Read full story on Bernanke’s speech. After falling more than 200 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed as much as 176 points, and finished with a gain of 134.72 points, or 1.2%, at 11,284.54. The index is up 4.3% for the week. Settling with a weekly rise of 4.7%, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 17.53 points, or 1.5%, to 1,1, with technology companies rising the most among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 60.22 points, or 2.5%, to 2,479.85, up 5.9% from the week-ago close. “We’ve had a pretty good week and a very good day,” said Tower, adding that “we’re in a bottoming process, which is better than a straight down process. “We still have this trouble brewing in Europe, that’s why we’re in a volatile funk.” For every stock that fell, four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 million shares traded; composite volume neared a relatively light 4.3 billion, a possible indication that a good number of traders had departed the New York area before Hurricane Irene. “There seemed to be a high amount of anxiety that he’d say something that was going to scare the markets, but right about when he started speaking, whatever the market was worried about seemed to go away,” said Randy Frederick, director of trading and derivatives at the Charles Schwab Center for Financial Research, pointing to the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, or VIX. The index shot up just ahead of Bernanke’s address, “then fell off a cliff right after he got done,” said Frederick. The VIX ended rose as high as 43.84 during the session, and ended down 4.14 points, or 10%, at 35.62. For three solid weeks the VIX was at very elevated levels, indicating many more people thought it would rise rather than fall, with the open interest put-call ratio on the VIX was at its highest level at Thursday’s close since the Japanese earthquake in March, Frederick noted.
