Post No. 1,193 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,613.53 up 53.58 or 0.46% from Monday's close of 11,539.25. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $91 +1.17 1.3% 12,661,683 and percentage-wise was Alcoa AA $12.8 +0.44 3.56% 31,032,651 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was AT&T T $28.48 -1.14 3.85% 112,612,936 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.90 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.87 (year ago it was 13.51); Wed's P/E estimate is 11.23 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 11.23 (year ago it was 12.02), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.65 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,534.49 up 7.08 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,527.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.15 up $0.24 from Tuesday's average closing price of $50.91. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.64 (AXP/JPM) up $0.78 from Tuesday's median closing price of $42.86. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $82.98 +0.91 1.11% 4,737,446 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.17 +0.05 0.62% 279,317,525 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $708 ($153,449 - $152,741).

MarketWatch Wednesday 8/31/11 5:26 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended higher Wednesday, with the fourth straight session of gains helping the Dow Jones Industrial Average reclaim an advance for the year. Monthly losses, however, were the steepest for the Dow and the S&P 500 Index since May 2010 — a month remembered for the confidence-battering “flash crash” — with stocks’ recent stretch of gains only denting damage from the first three weeks. The Dow industrials ended up 53.58 points, or 0.5%, at 11,613.53. A 3.6% gain in Alcoa Inc. shares led a rise for 23 of 30 Dow components. The session’s gains, which capped hours of seesawing that hinted at the month’s turbulence, pushed the Dow 0.3% higher for the year. The Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 are still in the red for 2011 — the results of weeks of investor uncertainty over the U.S. debt ceiling, the country’s credit outlook, the possibility of a double-dip recession and future Federal Reserve actions. Read more on August’s trading volatility and see slide show of August’s bear of a month.
Wednesday’s gains looked tenuous at times, as investors turned leery about data on the jobs front due in coming days. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s Philly Fed employment index, which this month dropped to its lowest level since October 2009, suggests that private-payroll growth will be flat this Friday, according to Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank.
“Considering economists as a group are predicting payroll growth of 100,000, there may be some disappointment,” he said. The S&P 500 gained 5.97 points, or 0.5%, to 1,218.89, its fourth session of gains, with financials leading advances for all but one of the index’s subsectors. “Right now it looks like the Aug. 8 low for the major market indexes marked the bottom of the July-August market correction,” said Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co. For the month, the S&P 500 fell 5.7%, its fourth straight monthly loss. It’s down 3.1% for the year. The Nasdaq Composite Index ended up 3.4 points, or 0.1%, to 2,579.46. The index's monthly loss of 6.4% was the worst since June 2010. For the year, the index is down 2.8%. For every two stocks that rose, nearly one fell on the New York Stock Exchange. AT&T Inc. led declines on the Dow, with the telecommunications giant’s shares falling 3.9% after the U.S. Justice Department sued to block AT&T’s proposed acquisition of wireless rival T-Mobile USA. Read more about U.S. suing to block AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile. The government is right to be concerned about the potential anticompetitive effects of the proposed merger, according to Peter Morici, a University of Maryland business professor.
“Such a merger would threaten the viability of Sprint arguably the more aggressive of the top three wireless carriers in introducing new technology —and solidify the grip of two legacy Bell companies,” he said. Stocks had gained early in the session after economic reports contained no big disappointments.
Ahead of the government’s August nonfarm payrolls report on Friday, payroll-processor ADP on Wednesday reported the addition of 91,000 private-sector jobs in August. The growth came in just shy of expectations but given the events of the past month, was still welcome. “With the decline in the stock market, debate in Washington and downgrade to the U.S. credit rating, it very much could have been worse,” analysts at BTIG Economics wrote in an email. “We suspect markets are likely to see this Friday’s nonfarm payrolls as the ‘crucial’ piece of evidence ahead of the next monetary-policy meeting, although it is not clear whether a moderate gain in jobs similar to today’s ADP report will provide much of an answer,” wrote Vassili Serebriakov, currency strategist at Wells Fargo, in a research note. A regional gauge of business activity in the Chicago area slipped in August, but still yielded better-than-expected results. Separately, a report had U.S. factory orders climbing 2.4% in July, with the rise topping market expectations.
