As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E ratio is 12.28 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.75 (year ago it was 13.83); Friday's P/E estimate is 11.39 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 11.39 (year ago it was 12.49), and Friday's dividend yield is 2.78 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.68 (last year it was 2.73). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,452.18 down 55.45 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,507.63. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.41 down $1.84 from Wednesday's average closing price of $50.25. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.74 (AXP/JPM) down $1.43 from Wednesday's median closing price of $41.17. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $49.79 -2.41 4.62% 5,870,526 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.01 -0.45 6.03% 331,488,702 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $5,533 ($150,763 - $145,230).
MarketWatch Thurday 8/18/11 4:29 pm by Kate Gibson Mandaro says U.S. stocks sank Thursday — an unwelcome echo of last week’s extreme moves — on worries about the global economy and the health of European banks.
“Some days investors are only willing to see the glass half empty, and that certainly seems to be the case today,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Asset Management Group. After falling as much as 528.61 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 10,990.58, down 419.63 points, or 3.7%, with all but one of its 30 components shedding value. Hewlett-Packard Co. shares fell 6%, leading decliners, after the computer maker cut its full-year sales forecast in an early release of its earnings, originally expected for after the bell. It also said it was “in discussions” with British software firm Autonomy Corp. PLC for a possible offer and is exploring alternatives for its PC business. Bank of America Corp. was off 6%. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined 53.24 points, or 4.5%, to 1,140.65, with energy slammed the hardest among its 10 industry groups, all of which were losing ground. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 131.05 points, or 5.2%, to 2,380.43. “We were ready for some kind of pullback, but it’s surprising as to how big it is today, it speaks to the general volatility,” said Ken Tower, a senior analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service. Morgan Stanley reduced its forecast for global growth, calling Europe’s policy answer to its sovereign-debt crisis insufficient. Also, U.S. regulators have intensified scrutiny of the U.S. divisions of European banks, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. Read full story about U.S. pressing European banks. PNC’s Stone said word that the Fed is checking up on U.S. branches of European banks is not in and of itself alarming. “People seem to be thinking they’re checking because something is up, I think it’s more that’s what you do; it’s all how you look at it,” he said. U.S. economic reports were mixed. The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose by 9,000 last week, but the four-week average, viewed as a more reliable gauge, fell to 402,500. The Conference Board reported its index of leading economic indictors grew 0.5% in July, better than the 0.4% rise expected by analysts polled by MarketWatch. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported factory activity in the region fell sharply in August, to negative 30.7 from 3.2 in July. The better-than-expected leading indicators report and drop in four-week average in jobless claims were “overshadowed by Europe and the Philly Fed was shockingly negative,” said Stone. “If you put a lot of stock in confidence and sentiment numbers you’d probably be pretty nervous right now, but consumers are still out there spending despite saying they have no confidence,” said Stone, who believes such measures should be taken with a grain of salt.
“The Philly Fed was ugly, but it’s a sentiment indicator, and could you possibly expect something good there with all the stuff going on?” he asked. “The data so far that we’re seeing does not indicate either we’re in a recession or headed into it. The market is concerned that all the turmoil is pushing us in that direction, but at the moment, we don’t see it,” said Stone. Tower at Quantitative Analysis concurred. “It’s just a question of growth going foward. People are worried about what would happen if the European financial system collapses, but if you look at the U.S. we’re actually in pretty good shape.”
