A read of the combined Saturday & Sunday print editions of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

$23.6 -5.91 20.03% 128,584,483 NYSE.
WSJ pB1 "Stocks end week on a sour note" by Steve Russolillo says another week, another bruising for US stock investors. For the 4th consecutive week, the Dow ended in the red after another volatile ride. Friday was a day of relatively few bad news headlines for US stock investors but they sold anyway. Hewlett-Packard was by far the Dow's biggest decliner on Fri as the tumbled to a year low. Investors fretted about the world's largest PC maker's extensive plans to reshape its business model. Shares dropped $5.91 or 20% to $23.60. The stock took 45 points off the price weighted Dow. IBM slumped 6.29. HP and IBM combined to account for more than half the Dow's decline on Fri.
Fin Times p11 "Hewlett-Packard plunges 20% in heavy tech sell off" by Ajay makan says the S&P was set to finish the week down more than 3% sparked bya sell off int each shares and a barrage of bad economic news. Although HP reported that it topped earnings forecasts for its most recent quarter, it revised its full year forecast sharply downward, from at least $4.27 a share to between $3.59 and $3.70 a share. The company cited potential restructuring and acquisition coasts, as well as slowing PC sales to consumers. A mixed week for retailer saw discount brands Target & Walmart up for the week after beating rev expectations in quarterly earnings reports.
NYT pB1 "Once again, fer sends stocks down" by Graham Bowleys ays after starting out the week with hopes of new found stability, stock market investors ended up experiencing another ugly week as worries about the global economy resurfaced.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.07 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.28 (year ago it was 13.78); Sat's P/E estimate is 11.11 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 11.39 (year ago it was 12.36), and Sat's dividend yield is 2.82 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.78 (last year it was 2.74). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,429.33 down 22.85 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,452.18. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.64 down $1.77 from Thursday's average closing price of $48.41. The median closing price of Frisday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.41 (AXP/JPM) down $0.33 from Thursday's median closing price of $39.74. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $49.46 -0.33 0.66% 4,629,352 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.97 -0.04 0.57% 286,823,454 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,297 ($145,230 - $142,933).
MarketWatch Friday 8/19/11 4:11 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks dropped Friday and lost ground for the fourth straight week, paced by a 6.6% weekly decline in the Nasdaq Composite, as investors slashed their expectations for economic growth and corporate spending. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 172.93 points, or 1.6%, at 10,817.65 and slid 4% for the week. The S&P 500 fell 17.12 points, or 1.5%, to 1,123.53 and slid 4.7% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite lost 38.59 points, or 1.6%, to 2,341.84. Tech stocks were particularly hard hit, led by a 20% drop in Hewlett-Packard Co. shares.
