The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,410.24 up 4.28 or 0.04% from Tuesday's close of 11,405.93. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Coke KO $69.275 +1.105 1.62% 10,417,986 NYSE and percentage-wise was Verizon VZ $35.61 +0.73 2.09% 15,332,778 DualListed. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $87.57 -1.78 1.99% 9,616,582 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $31.34 -1.27 3.89% 22,000,090 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.74 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.86 (year ago it was 14.03); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 11.39 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 11.39 (year ago it was 12.49), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.67 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,507.63 up 0.57 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,507.06. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.25 up $0.01 from Tuesday's average closing price of $5024. MarketWatch Wednesday 8/17/11 4:12 pm by Laura Mandaro says a bleaker outlook for technology shares weighed on the Nasdaq Composite and kept the other major benchmarks to minor gains on Wednesday. At the close of a session marked by modest volume and shallow moves on both sides of break even, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 4.28 points, or 0.04%, to 11,410.21, with American Express Co. leading percent gainers and Hewlett-Packard Co. shares fronting decliners. The S&P 500 ended up 1.13 points, or 0.1%, to 1,193.89. Telecommunications were up the most and tech took the steepest drop, led by a 10% fall in Dell Inc. shares. The Nasdaq Composite slid 11.97 points, or 0.5%, to 2,511.48.

MarketWatch Tuesday 8/16/11 4:10 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks on Tuesday closed lower for their first down session in four after a summit of European leaders did not deliver the immediate, concrete solutions some investors had hoped for, compounding worries about the region's outlook. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended down 76.97 points, or 0.7%, to 11,405.93, led by a 4.6% drop in Bank of America Corp. shares. The S&P 500 slid 11.73 points, or 1%, to 1,192.76, with financials hit hardest after the German and French leaders said they planned to propose a tax on financial transactions, but dismissed the idea of issuing euro-zone bonds. The Nasdaq Composite lost 31.75 points, or 1.2%, to 2,523.45.
