A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, & Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomber) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.

WSJ pA1 "Downgrade ignites a global selloff" by E.S. Browning says the downgradeof the US credit rating sparked a global selloff on Mon, pushing the Dow to its sharpest one day decline since the fin'l crisis in '08. No US bank is more closely tied to the performance of an ailing US economy than Bank of America.

Fin Times p22 "Fin'ls & energy tumble as downgrade sparks fears for recovery" by Telis Demos says US stocks took a steep dive on Mon as traders reacted late in the session to the US credit rating downgrade by S&P with the S&P experiencing its biggest one day fall since Dec. '08. Bank of America was the biggest faller on the S&P after AIG sued it.

WSJ pC5 "Investors take flight, search for safe havens' by Brendan Conways ays investors fled risk assets far & wide in Monday's stock market rout. Verizon shed $1.93 after 45,000 workers went out on strike. Bank of America lost $1.66 to lead blue chip decliners.

USA Today p5B "Stocks react strongly to S&P's credit rating downgrading' by Bloomberg says stocks tumbled Mon, extending the biggest slump for the S&P since '08's bear market, amid concern that a downgrade of the nation's credit rating by S&P may worsen an economic slowdown. Bank of America fell $1.66 or 20% and Caterpillar slumped $8.39 pacing losses in stocks most tied to the economy. Chevron fell $7.36 as oil hit an 8 month low.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E ratio is 12.10 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.82 (year ago it was 14.47); Tuesday's P/E estimate is 11.48 unchanged from Yesterday's P/E estimate of 11.48 (year ago it was 12.80), and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.81 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,428.30 down 8,387 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,512.17. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.61 down $2.80 from Friday's average closing price of $50.41. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $38.55 (AXP/JPM) down $3.95 from Friday's median closing price of $42.50. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $8,387 ($151,217 - $142,830).

MarketWatch Monday 8/8/11 4:13 pm by Laura Mandauro says U.S. stocks closed with broad, deep losses Monday after a Standard & Poor's cut of the U.S. credit rating to double-A sparked a flight to safe-haven investments such as gold.
