3/1/13 Fri am Boeing: "We have 787 Battery Fix"

Post No. 2,070  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of   Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14,054.49 down 20.88 or 0.15% from Wednesday's close of 14,075.37. For the year the Dow is up 7.25%. Of the Dow components 12 gained and 18 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron up 50 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.87%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.50 and percentage-wise was down 1.23 %.

WSJ pC4 "Late fade deflates stocks" by Alexandra Scaggs says blue chips charted to within striking distance of the recird but had a late dive.   Five firms including Coke, sold a combined $12.5 bil of debt in the third busiest high grade session of the year.

FT p22 "JC Penney sells off as investors shop elsewhere after poor results" by Anora Mahmudova says  US equities which were trading higher for most of the day boosted by positive economic data closed in the red but still had a modest 1% monthly gain.

NYT pB6 "After a sturdy start, the market falls back" by Reuters says stocks ended flat on Thurs gtiving up modest gains late in the session & denying the Dow a chance to inch closer to a record high.

AJC pA11 "Dow edges near record, then fades" by Christina Rexrode, AP says the Dow came within 15 points of its all timehigh Thurs.

IBD pB2 "Stocks give up day's gains; volume rises in sell off" by Paul Whitfield says stocks staged a negative reversal Thur closing slightly down after being up most of the day as the current outlook is the market is still in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.55 down  from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.59 (year ago it was 14.53); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.54 unchanged from Thursday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 12.45) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.55 up from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,830.12 down 2.72 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,832.84. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $61.00 down 9 cents from Wednesday's average of $61.09. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.02 (DIS/UNH) down 15 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $54.17. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $272 ($183,284 - $183,012).

2/28/13 Thursday 4:18 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Thursday finished mildly lower after a last-minute retreat from gains that had the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.15% coming within 15 points of its all-time closing high. "We've had a great run here, so it's perfectly natural for a little selling to come in after such a move," said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management. "We have two enormous opposing forces. On the one hand we have deleveraging, which we saw in the GDP numbers with government spending down. Then we have enormous stimulus, and it's pretty clear which side is winning," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.15% ended at 14,054.49, down 20.88 points, or 0.2%, leaving it up 1.4% for its third consecutive monthly gain. The S&P 500 SPX-0.09% shed 1.31 point, or 0.1%, to 1,514.68, up 1.1% for February, which extended its monthly winning streak to four. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP-0.07% lost 2.07 points, or 0.1%, to 3,160.19, leaving it up 0.6% for the month.
