Post No. 2,093 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 3/1/13.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14,539.14 up 83.86 or 0.58% from Wednesday's close of 14,455.28. For the year the Dow is up 10.95%. Of the Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $3.74 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 2.86%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar down 58 cents and percentage-wise was Home Depot down 0.73%.
WSJ pC1 "S&P 500 takes its own shot" by Jonathan Cheng says the Dow's rally is a record breaking 10 days as the Dow rode good news in the labor market which hasn not seen a single losing session so far in March.
NYT pB8 "Jobless news lifts shares; Dow rises for 10th day" by Reuters says the market was up due to data showing the labor market's recovery was improving. 10 of the Dow's stocks hit at least 52 week highs including Disney. IBM hit a high of $215.80 up $3.74.
FT p24 "IBM joins srried ranks of stocks on quick march to record highs" by Anora Mahmudova says IBM hit an all time high Thurs joining some 73 stocks reaching record peaks in the past week. IBM is the most heavily weighted component in the Dow. American Express hit a record high Tues at $65.76.
IBD pB2 "Stocks post solid gains, as pace of trade picks up" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted moderate gains Thurs as volume picked up on major exchanges. The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.99 up from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.94 (year ago it was 14.83); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.69 unchanged from Thursday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.69 (year ago it was 12.39) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.45 unchanged from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.45 (last year it was 2.47). The Dow's all-time high was 14,539.14 on March 14, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,893.23 up 10.92 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,882.31. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.11 up 37 cents from Wednesday's average of $62.74. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.24 (DIS/UNH) up 33 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $55.91. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,092 ($189,323 - $188,231).
3/14/13 Thursday 4:09 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rallied Thursday, with the S&P 500 index SPX +0.56% finishing within 2 points of its all-time closing high and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.58% extending gains into a 10th session, its longest win streak since late 1996. "What's driving the market is central bankers of the world pumping liquidity into the system," said Martin Leclerc, chief investment officer at Barrack Yard Advisors. The Dow industrials gained 83.86 points, or 0.6%, to 14,539.14. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.56% rose 8.71 points, or 0.6%, to 1,563.23.
