The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14,421.49 down 90.24 or 0.62% from Wednesday's close of 14,511.73. Of the Dow components 7 gained  and 23 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Verizon up 23 cents or 0.47%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.57 and percentage-wise was Cisco down 3.83 %.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 16.11 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.90 (year ago it was 14.69); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.97 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 12.97 (year ago it was 12.83) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.45 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 14,539.14 on March 14, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,877.91 down  11.75 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,889.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.60 down 39 cents from Wednesday's average of $62.99. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.71 (DIS/UNH) down 19 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $55.90. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,175 ($188,966 - $187,791).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.62% declined 90.24 points, or 0.6%, to 14,421.49 and the S&P 500 index SPX -0.83% slumped 12.91 points, or 0.8%, to 1,545.80. The Nasdaq Composite index COMP -0.97% dropped 31.59 points, or 1%, to 3,222.60. Shares of software maker Oracle slumped nearly 10% after the company's earnings disappointed investors.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14,511.73 up 55.91 or 0.39% from Tuesday's close of 14,455.82. For the year the Dow is up 10.74%. Of the Dow components 23 gained, AT&T was unchanged and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM p $1.47 and percentage-wise was American Express up 1.32%. 3/20/13 Wednesday 4:11 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended higher Wednesday, with the S&P 500 SPX+0.67% snapping its first three-day losing run this year, after the Federal Reserve said its stimulus would continue. "The sequester as well as the elimination of the payroll-tax deduction, these factors are major fiscal drags on the economy, and the Fed is working with that in mind," said David Allon, a senior financial professional at FirsTrust Financial Resources LLC.
