Post No. 2,108 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 3/1/13.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; Sun's & Sat's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14,512.03 up 90.54 or 0.63% from Thursday's close of 14,421.49. For the year the Dow is up 10.74%. For the week the Dow is down 2.08 or or 0.01 % from last Friday's close of 14,514.11. Of the Dow components 22 gained, Alcoa was unchanged and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 60 cents or 1.09%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $1.48 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 3.23%.
IBD pB8 "Stocks make headway as Nasdaq volume rises" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted solid gains Fri with Nasdaq volume rising despite a tough comparison as Friday's action was up in mixed volume and the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
FT p11 "Stocks rally on talks to avoid Cyprus meltdown" by Dave Shellock says global equities ended the week on a mildly positive note & the euro rallied as all eyes remained on whether Cyprus would manage to avoid fin'l meltdown
Sat. WSJ pB6 "Dow shakes off Europe drama and gains" by Matt jarzemsky says US stocks gained ground Fri nearly erasing the week's losses for the Dow as investors started to look past the latest eurozone debt tumult.
Sat NYT pB6 "In the middle of a climb, the amrkets take a breather" by AP says strong company earnings lifted stocks on Wall St on Fri & investors saw a chance to add to their holdings after declines earlier in the week.
As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 15.90 down from Friday's openining P/E ratio of 16.11 (year ago it was 14.64); Friday's closing P/E estimate is 12.90 down from Friday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.97 (year ago it was 12.65) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.45 down from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.45 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,539.14 on March 14, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,889.70 up 11.79 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,877.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.69 up 39 cents from Thursday's average of $62.60. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.62 (DIS/UNH) down 9 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $55.71. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,179 ($188,970 - $187,791).
3/22/13 Friday 4:13 pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowsi says U.S. stocks finished higher Friday, but logged slight losses for the week, boosted by investor optimism over the Cyprus crisis and positive earnings reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.63% rose 90.54 points, or 0.6%, to close at 14,512.03, but the blue-chip index was down less than 0.1% for the week. The S&P 500 Index SPX+0.72% advanced 11.09 points, or 0.7%, to close at 1,556.89, a loss of 0.2% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP+0.70% rose 22.40 points, or 0.7%, to close at 3,245.00, a loss of 0.1% for the week.
