3/12/13 Tues. pm Dow Closes at 14,450.06 Record High up 2.77 or 0.02%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14,450.06  up 2.77  or 0.02% from Monday's close of 14,397.07.    Of the Dow components 12   gained, ExxonMobil was unchanged  and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up $1.38 or 3.16%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.44 or 1.58%.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.82 up from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.76 (year ago it was 14.50); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.69 unchanged from Monday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.69 (year ago it was 12.29) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.43 unchanged from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.43 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,450.06 on March 12, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,881.63 up 0.42   from Monday's closing numerator of 1,881.27. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.72 up 1 cent    from Monday's average of $62.71. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55969 (DIS/UNH) up 7 cents from Monday's median closing price of $55.89. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $37  ($188,163 - $188,126).

3/12/13 Tuesday 4:10  pm MarketWatch by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday, but the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.02% staged a turnaround moments before the closing bell and managed to edge into positive territory to an all-time high. The Dow gained 2.77 points, or 0.02%, to end at 14,450.06, rising for an eighth session in a row -- its longest winning streak since February 2011. But the S&P 500 SPX -0.24% , a broader stock-market gauge, fell 3.74 points, or 0.2%, to 1,552.48, snapping a seven-session winning streak. Technology and financials were the biggest decliners among its 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.32% dropped 10.55 points, or 0.3%, to 3,242.32.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 14,447.297 up 50.22 or 0.35% from Friday's close of 14,397.07. For the year the Dow is up 10.25%. Of the Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing up $1.68 or 2.07%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon down 15 centsw and percentage-wise was GE down 0.59%.

FT p22 "Vix fear gauge at 6 year low as S&P nudges all time closing high" by Arash Massoudi says the CBOE Vix index, dubbed Wall St's fear gauge touched a 6 year low yesterday as US stocks rose. The Vix measures implied volatility fell 8%. Bank of America rose 0.7% and JPMorgan rose 0.6% on reports it may do a share buyback of about $7.5 Bil.

NYT pB3 "Market rally continues thoguh volume is light" by Reuters says the stock market rose modeestly on Mon. Stocks have rallied since the start of the year due to signs of improvement int he economy & the Fed's continuing program of quantitative easing to stimulate the economy.

IBD pB2 "Indexes reverse higher etching fresh milestones" by Vincent Mao says stocks started weakly but ended strongly Mon with most of the major indexes logging multiyear highs or better as the action was up in mixed vol and the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

AJC pA7 "Seventh straight day of gains" by AP says the Dow hit its 7th straight days of gain.

Shares of Genworth Financial Inc. GNW +6.71% jumped 6.4% after Barron’s reported the recently reorganized life insurer and provider of mortgage securities could nearly double in the next year. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.32% added 4.18 points, or 0.3%, to 1,555.39, leaving it less than 10 points from its closing high of 1,565.15, hit in October 2007. After hitting an all-time high last week on a better-than-expected monthly jobs report, the Dow industrials DJIA +0.35% on Monday rose 33.47 points, or 0.2%, to 14,430.34.“The Dow is what gets all the news among the public, as it is more widely recognized, but for the insider and for technical reasons, it’s more important for the S&P 500 to breach its previous closing high,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott.“As long as there is this widely held view that we’re in for a correction, we’re likely not going to have one,” added Luschini of expectations that the market was due for a pullback, given the more than 10% rise by the Dow so far this year.
