http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,090  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 3/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14,450.06 up 2.77 or 0.02% from Monday's close of 14,397.07. For the year the Dow is up 10.27%.   Of the Dow components 12 gained, ExxonMobil was unchanged and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up $1.38 or 3.16%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.44 or 1.58%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks cling to streak" by Alexandra Scaggs says the Dow eked out a slim gain to continue its recent run to record highs although other major indexes declined as investors weighed mixed economic reports at home & abroad.  Merck was listed under Good News as a board overseeing a trial of cholesterol drug Vytorin recommended the study continue.  Bank of america was down 14 cents.  Walmart rose 62 cents after its CFO said it hadn't seen any drop in spending from the payroll tax increase.

IBD pB4 "Most indexes' losses mild as winning streaks end" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks halted their recent winning streak Tes but kept their losses in check as volume rises with mild losses & the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB8 "Dow ekes outs 8th consecutive gain in otehrwise flat trading" & AJC pA9 "Dow ekes out small gain" by AP says the Dow had its 8th straight day in the plus column and the winningest streak in more than 2 years.

FT p22 "S&P 500 ends winning streak as investors look to take profits" by Arash Massoudi says US stocks retreated from multiyear highs Tues with the leading US benchmark snapping a 7 day winning streak as investors looked to take profits.  Boeing rose 0.9% on reports it had   a 200 jet order from Ryanair.  Hewlett-Packard rose 1.8% as the UK's Serious Fraud Office said it launched an investigation into Autonomy.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6  of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 16.04 up from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.82   (year ago it was 14.75); today's opening P/E estimate is 12.69 unchanged from Tuesday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.69 (year ago it was 12.39) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.44 up from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.43 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,450.06 on March 12, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,881.63 up 0.42 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,881.27. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.72 up 1 cent from Monday's average of $62.71. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.96  (DIS/UNH) up 7 cents from Monday's median closing price of $55.89. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $37 ($188,163 - $188,126).

3/12/13 Tuesday 4:10 pm MarketWatch by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday, but the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.02% staged a turnaround moments before the closing bell and managed to edge into positive territory to an all-time high. The Dow gained 2.77 points, or 0.02%, to end at 14,450.06, rising for an eighth session in a row -- its longest winning streak since February 2011. But the S&P 500 SPX -0.24% , a broader stock-market gauge, fell 3.74 points, or 0.2%, to 1,552.48, snapping a seven-session winning streak. Technology and financials were the biggest decliners among its 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.32% dropped 10.55 points, or 0.3%, to 3,242.32.
