Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14,089.66 up 35.17 or 0.25% from Thursday's close of 14,054.49. For the week the Dow was up 89.09 or 0.64% from last Friday's close of 14,000.57.For the year the Dow is up 7.52%. Of the Dow components 16 gained, Hewlett-Packard was unchanged and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.85 and percentage-wise was Walmart up 1.36%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.19 or 1.29%.

Sat. WSJ pB4 "Shares get back on winning track" by Matt Jarzemsky says Blue chip stocks rose to within 75 points of their closing high as upbeat domestic factory data outweighed a stalemate in US budget talks.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 15.48 down from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.55 (year ago it was 14.52); Friday's closing P/E estimate is 12.53 down from Friday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 12.45) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.51 down from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.55 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,834.70 up 2.58 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,830.12. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $61.16 up16 cents from Thursday's average of $61.00. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.40 (DIS/UNH) up 38 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $54.02. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $258 ($183,470 - $183,012).

2/28/13 Thursday 4:18 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Thursday finished mildly lower after a last-minute retreat from gains that had the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.15% coming within 15 points of its all-time closing high. "We've had a great run here, so it's perfectly natural for a little selling to come in after such a move," said Alan Skrainka, chief investment officer at Cornerstone Wealth Management. "We have two enormous opposing forces. On the one hand we have deleveraging, which we saw in the GDP numbers with government spending down. Then we have enormous stimulus, and it's pretty clear which side is winning," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.15% ended at 14,054.49, down 20.88 points, or 0.2%, leaving it up 1.4% for its third consecutive monthly gain.
