Post No. 2,134 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 1, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 1, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14,673.46 up 59.98 or 0.33% from Monday's close of 14,613.48. For the year the Dow is up 11.98 %. Of the Dow components 20 gained, American Express was unchanged and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up $1.71 or 3.57%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble down 53 cents or 0.67%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks stop their dance, find a new high" by Matt jarzemsky says stocks pushed higher with traders pointing to a slow but steady stream of new money heading into the market & lifting prices as 1Q earnings season gets under way.
NYT pB8 "Optimistic investors help market make up ground" by Reuters says the market rose Tues as earnings season got under way with the Dow closing at another record high.
FT p22 "JC Penney seen struggling with sales even after change at the top" by Anora Mahmudova says US equity markets moved higher after an initial shaky start shrugging off concerns due to weak quarterly earnings & ahead of the Fed minutes from March meeting due today. As rivalry in mobile search space heated up, Microsoft rose 3.6% after it teamed with Nokia & Expedia to file an antitrust complaint vs. Google.
AJC pA9 "Dow closdes agt record high" by Steve Rothwell, AP says materials & energy firms led the market higher Tues sending the Dow to its 2nd all time high in a week.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.08 up from yesterday's P/E ratio of 16.02 (year ago it was 14.45); today's P/E estimate is 13.05 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 13.05 (year ago it was 12.55) and today's dividend yield is 2.43 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.39 (last year it was 2.58). The Dow's all-time high was 14,673.46 on April 9, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,910.72 up 8.81 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,902.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.69 up 26 cents from Monday's average of $63.43. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.66 (DIS/UNH) up 31 cents from Monday's median closing price of $60.35. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $881 ($191,072 -190,291).
4/9/13 Tuesday 4:2 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stock indexes rose on Tuesday, lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a record high, as Wall Street embraced the start of first-quarter earnings.“The fundamentals are too good to put a ceiling on the market. During the fourth quarter, companies gave very, very muted outlooks on the first quarter, so earnings might be mildly surprising on the upside,” said Margie Patel, senior portfolio manager at Wells Capital Management. After climbing 102.98 points to an all-time intraday high of 14,716.46, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.41% finished at a record closing high of 14,673.46, up 59.98 points.Microsoft Corp. MSFT+3.57% and Intel Corp. INTC+3.13% paced gains that included 20 of the blue-chip index’s 30 members.Alcoa Inc. AA0.00% shares finished flat after the aluminum producer reported results that marked the unofficial start of the earnings season. Read more about how Alcoa earnings could boost the market. After advancing to within a few points of its intraday record of 1,576.09, set on Oct. 11, 2007, the S&P 500 index SPX+0.35% rose 5.54 points to 1,568.61, leaving it just below its 1,570.25 record finish set April 2.Sector gains were led by natural-resource companies, which drew support from Chinese inflation that slowed more than had been expected. Defensive sectors, which performed the best in the first quarter, were the session’s weaker performers. Amid allegations of insider trading, KPMG resigned on Tuesday as auditor at Herbalife Ltd. HLF-3.75% and Skechers USA Inc. SKX+1.86% .Shares of both companies were halted for a period during the session.
J.C. Penney Co. Inc. JCP-12.22% plummeted as analysts deemed Myron Ullman’s return to the helm of the struggling retailer as not necessarily a fix for the struggling retailer. The Nasdaq Composite COMP+0.48% climbed 15.61 points to 3,237.85.For every three stocks falling more than four rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 670 shares traded.Composite volume surpassed 3.2 billion. The dollar DXY-0.37% fell against other global currencies, including the yen USDJPY+0.12% and the euro EURUSD-0.02% .Longer-term Treasury prices held steady or fell, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note 10_YEAR-0.17% used to determine the rate of mortgages and other consumer loans at 1.749%.“Investors would love to see higher interest rates; I just don’t see it,” said Wells Capital’s Patel, who adds the relatively muted price of commodities will keep inflation low.On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the price of oil CLK3-0.22% rose 84 cents to $94.20 a barrel, while gold futures for April delivery GCJ3+0.78% gained $14.20, or 0.9%, to end at $1,586.20 an ounce. On Monday, U.S. stocks finished modestly higher as investors again viewed a market dip as a buying opportunity.
