http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,158  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 1, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 1, 2013.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14,676.30 down 43.16 or 0.29% from Tuesday's close of 14,719.46. For the year the Dow is up 12%. Of the Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $2.71 and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 3.79%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble own $5.57 or 6.75%.

WSJ pC4 "Earnings fail to insprie" by Alexandra Scaggs says a string of gains for stocks stalled after a pair of blue chip earnings reports failed to impress and a reading on durable goods orders came in below expectations.  Boeing rallied $2.65 after earnings and rev topped estimates but AT&T fell $1.96 after it missed rev forecasts and a pair of analysts downg4raded it.  Procter & Gamble fell $4.82 after the company cut its outlook.  AT&T is charted under Bad News.

NYT pB7 "Wall St ends mostly flat on mixed earnings" by AP,  AJC pA13 "Earnings disappoint Dow" by AP say AT&T and Procter & Gamble's earnings disappointed investors causing the Dow to fall.

IBD pB2 "Stock indexes rise mildly but IBD 50, biotechs sink" by David Saito-Chung syas the major averages traded in a tight range to finish with a mild tilt to the upside as Wed's action was mixed finish in higher trade; small caps outperform.  The current outlook is the market is in a correction.

FT p20 "Apple struggles while AT&T retreats as rival expands faster" by Arash Massoudi says US stocks were muted as Apple shares tried to find new momentum.  AT&T fell steeply as did Procter & Gamble after it reduced its forecasts for the current quarter.  AT&T fell 5% due to analysts belief that its wireless biz was coming at a slower rate than Verizon's.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.14 down   from yesterday's P/E ratio of 16.19   (year ago it was 14.58); today's P/E estimate is 13.05 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 13.05 (year ago it was 12.32) and today's dividend yield is 2.44 up   from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.43 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,865.14 on April 11, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,911.09 down 5.62 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,916.71. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.70 down 19 cents from Tuesday's average of $63.89. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.31 (DIS/UNH) down 26 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $60.57. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $562 ($191,671 - $191,109).

4/24/13 Wednesday 4:06 pm MarketWatch by Polya Lesova says the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.29% fell for the first session in four on Wednesday, dragged lower by steep declines for Procter & amp; Gamble Co. PG -5.88% and AT&T Inc. T -5.03% . The S&P 500 index SPX +0.0006% was unchanged at the closing bell, at 1,578.79 at 4 p.m. The Dow DJIA -0.29% dropped 43.16 points to 14,676.30.
