The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14,606.11 up 55.76 or 0.38% from Wednesday's close of 14,550.35. The  Of the Dow components 25   gained and 5 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wisewas McDonald's up $1.37 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.71%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  IBM down $.143 and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 0.73%.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.07 unchanged from yesterday's P/E ratio of 16.07 (year ago it was 14.63); today's P/E estimate is 12.95 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 12.95 (year ago it was 12.63) and today's closing dividend yield is 2.45 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.43 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,622.01 on April 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,901.95 up 7.26    from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,894.69. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.40 up 34  cents from Wednesday's average of $63.16. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.78 (DIS/UNH) up 30 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $59.48. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $726   ($190,195 - $189,46).

4/4/13 Thursday 4:03  pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks  resumed an advance Thursday as cheer over Japan's monetary stimulus overcame resistance that came as U.S. jobless claims climbed to a four-month high. "In the global sense, don't fight the Fed," said Tim Leach, chief investment officer of the private client reserve of U.S. Bank Wealth Management, referring to the Bank of Japan's announcement of aggressive easing measures, which comes along with similar moves by central banks in the United States and Europe. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.38% was up 55.76 points, or 0.4%, to 14,606.11. The S&P 500 SPX +0.40% rose 6.29 points, or 0.4%, to 1,559.98. The Nasdaq Composite /COMP +0.20% gained 6.38 points, or 0.2%, to 3,224.98.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 14,550.35 down 111.66 or 0.76%. Of the Dow components 3 gained and 27 declined. For the year the Dow is up 11.04%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up 45 cents or 1 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.70 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan down 2.96%.

4/3/13 Wednesday 4:27 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Wednesday, with the benchmark indexes taking their worst hit in more than five weeks, after labor-market data disappointed ahead of Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report.“If you stack up economic data over the last few days, a handful have disappointed, including today,” said Art Hogan, a market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets.

Equities continued their slide after the release of a gauge of the U.S. services sector, with the Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturingg index in March falling to 54.4 from 56 the month before.
American corporations starts reporting first-quarter results next week, with Alcoa Inc. AA-0.36% slated to release its earnings for the period on Monday.Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President John Williams on Wednesday said the central bank could start reducing its $85 billion-a-month asset-purchases by the summer.The comments followed those by St. Louis Fed Bank President James Bullard, who spoke in favor of trimming the bond purchase program in $10-$15 billion increments in response to changes in the economy.
