Post No. 2,124 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 1, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 1, 2013.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Investor's Business Daily, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14,662.01 up 89.16 or 0.61% from Monday's close of 14,572.85. For the year the Dow is up 11.89%. Of the Dow components 23 gained, Bank of America was unchanged and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $2.77 or 4.7 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down $1.21 or 5.19%.
WSJ pC4 "New records come with fresh worries" by Jonathan Cheng says US stocks soared to new highs as investors piled intohealth care stocks & Cyprus got a reprieve on its debts, though there were signs that investors were growing cautious. UnitedHealth Group topped the Dow up 4.7% after new gov rates indicated firms running Medicare Advantage plans will get mroe money than expected. Hewlett-Packard is charted under bad news as Goldman Sachs downgraded it to netural, saying optimism has become unrealistic.
NYT pB3 "Rate increase for private medicare buoys an uncertain market" by Reuters says stocks rose Tues due to better reimbrusement rates for private Medicare insurers. Hewlett-Packard fell 5.2% after Goldman Sachs downgraded them to sell.
FT p20 "Decsion to raise Medicare rates gives insurers a shot inthe arm" by Anora Mahmudova says health insurers were in focus Tues after the US said it would not cut a key Medicare payment rate but would increase it. UnitedHealth which was upgraded by analysts at Raymond James to strong buy rose 4.7%
IBD pB4 "Stocks set recrods again, yet leaders underperform" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks mostly achieved solid gains Tues but showed afternoon shakiness as most indexes gained as trade rose. the Current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
AJC pA11 "Health insurers raise stocks" by AP says the Dow closed at a record high Tues after health insurers powered the gains due to good gov releaed reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage plans.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.07 up from yesterday's P/E ratio of 15.96 (year ago it was 14.77); today's P/E estimate is 12.95 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 12.95 (year ago it was 12.63) and today's closing dividend yield is 2.43 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,622.01 on April 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,909.23 up 11.61 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,897.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.64 up 39 cents from Monday's average of $63.25. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.60 (DIS/UNH) up $1.79 cents from Monday's median closing price of $57.81. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would havemade $1,161 ($190,923 - $189,762).
4/2/13 Tuesday 4:03 pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks gained Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.61% and the S&P 500 SPX +0.52% both closing at record highs as health insurers rallied on Medicare-reimbursement news and U.S. factory orders rose in February. "There are still some risks out there. But for the market to be at new highs here, based on where earnings are, and where economic growth is, it's reasonable," says Jim Dunigan, managing executive for investments at PNC Wealth Management. The Dow industrials rose 88.16 points, or 0.6%, to 14,662.01, with the blue-chip index topping the prior record hit late last week. The S&P 500 added 8.08 points, or 0.5%, to 1,570.25, its all-time closing high. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.48% rose 15.69 points, or 0.5%, to end at 3,254.86, with the technology-heavy index 1,793.76 points from its record-high finish of 5,048.62, set on March 10, 2000.
