4/26/13 Fri am 3M and Exxon Miss Analyst Expectations

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,160  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 1, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 1, 2013.

A read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14,700.80 up 24.5 or 0.17% from Wednesday's close of 14,676.30. For the year the Dow is up 12.18%.  Of the Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $2.24 and percentage-wise was Verizon up 2.74%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M down $2.99 or 2.77%.

WSJ pC4 "Jobs report powers S&P's drive to five" by Chris Dieterich says telecoms & materials drove the S&P to a fith advance in a row after a string of strong earnings reports & an upbeat reading from the labor market.   3M slid 2.99 after it reported quarterly results that trailed analysts' forecast & trimmed its earnigns forecast for the year.  Exxon eased 1.36 after reporting a quarterly profit that topped views but rev missed expectations.

NYT pB8 "Earnings uptick and better jobless data lift shares" by Reuters says the market rose on stronger than expected earnigns & a large drop in weekly applications for unemployment benefits.

AJC pA15 "Job market lifts stocks" by AP says the 3 major US stock indexes all closed higher as good news on the job market was released.

IBD pB2 "Stocks p for 5th session in row near new highs" by Paul Whitfield says stocks tacked on gains for a 5th straight day as the market was up in rising volume as the market is in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.16 up   from yesterday's P/E ratio of 16.14   (year ago it was 14.75); today's P/E estimate is 13.05 unchanged from Thursday' s P/E estimate of 13.05 (year ago it was 12.32) and today's dividend yield is 2.46 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,865.14 on April 11, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,914.28 up 3.19 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,911.09. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.81 up 11 cents from Wednesday's average of $63.70. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.67 (DIS/UNH) up 36 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $60.31. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $319 ($191,428 - $191,109).

4/25/13 MarketWatch 4:46 pm Wallacke Witkowski & Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended up on Thursday, buoyed by corporate-earnings reports and data showing a sharp drop in weekly jobless claims. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.40% a broad measure of the stock market, closed up 6.37 points, or 0.4%, at 1,585.16, after hitting an intraday high of 1,592.64. Stocks, which had been trading near session highs for much of the day, pared gains in the afternoon following a report in the German daily Handelsblatt that Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann sent a letter to Germany’s constitutional court criticizing the European Central Bank’s Outright Money Transactions, or OMT. Weidmann, in his comments, said the OMT can affect the independence of central banks and devalues the sovereign debt of countries in the program. The OMT bond-buying program allows the ECB to step in to buy the debt of governments that apply for help from Europe’s rescue fund. U.S. stocks had maintained positive momentum for most of the day after the Labor Department reported the number of people who applied for new unemployment benefits last week fell by 16,000 to 339,000. However, the decline probably reflected some seasonal distortions tied to the Easter holiday. While the improved employment numbers certainly did not hurt stocks, Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, thinks earnings reports are doing more to support stocks. “We’re really getting into earnings season in earnest,” Luschini said. “Better-than-expected numbers are coming in to a lowered bar even though some of the economic news over the past few weeks hasn’t been that good.” Many of the people who are buying stocks now are the same ones who were selling them a week ago on bad news, said Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at BMO Capital Markets, who compared the behavior to that of an old-fashioned bull market. “Unfortunately, for many investors, they haven’t seen this in over a decade,” Belski said. Nine out of 10 S&P 500 sectors were in positive territory with materials and telecoms leading the way and energy registering a slight loss on the day. Akamai Technologies Inc. AKAM +0.18% was the top gainer in the S&P 500, with shares closing up nearly 18% after the company’s quarterly earnings rose 65%. Cliffs Natural Resources Inc.f CLF +14.98% was close behind with a 15% gain after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results late Wednesday. S&P 500 options were affected Thursday after the Chicago Board Options Exchange halted trading after experiencing system problems. Trading resumed at 1 p.m. Eastern. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.17% finished up 24.50 points, or 0.2%, at 14,700.80, with 11 of its 30 components in negative territory. Earlier, the index traded as high as 92 points for an intraday high of 14,768.05. Verizon Communications Inc. z VZ +2.74% was the best performer on the index with a 2.7% gain. Reuters reported the telecom major plans to bid $100 billion in cash and stock to buy out Verizon Wireless, which it jointly owns with Vodafone Group PLC VOD +2.82%UK:VOD+1.66% . A spokesperson for Verizon declined to comment on the Reuters report.
