Post No. 2,239 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Saturday & Sunday's Wall St. Journal & Financial Times: & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14799.4 up 41.08 or 0.28% from Thursday's close of 14758.32. For the year the Dow is up 12.94%. For the week the Dow was down 270.78 or 1.8% from last Friday's close of 15070.18. Of the Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble up $2.18 and percentage-wise was Coke up 1.61%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.89 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 2.31%.
IBD pB8 "Stocks end mixed Friday, but S&P hits wall at 1600" by Paul Whitfield says stocks took a stab at a rebound in the opening minutes Friday then quickly sagged before reversing higher in the afternoon. Friday's action was mixed in heavy volume and the current outlook is the market is in a correction.
Sat. AJC pA8 "Investors buying again" by AP says stocks rose after investors decided that the sell off earlier in the week may have been overdone.
As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B11 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 16.17 up from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 16.13 (last year it was 13.94); Friday's closing P/E estimate is 13.35 down from Friday's opening P/E estimate of 13.62 (year ago it was 12.15) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.47 unchanged from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1927.12 up 5.35 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1921.77. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.24 up 18 cents from Thursday's average of $64.06. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.32 (DIS/UNH) up 43 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $62.89. The lowest volume was TRV and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $535 ($192,712 -$192,177 ).
Friday MarketWatch 4:10 by Polya Lesova & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks eked out modest gains on Friday, but posted losses for the week, which was dominated by fears that the Federal Reserve may begin pulling back stimulus later this year. After a very choppy trading session, the S&P 500 index SPX+0.27% gained 4.24 points, or 0.3%, to end at 1,592.43. It fell 2.1% for the week.Eight of the S&P 500’s 10 major sectors ended higher, with consumer staples leading gainers and information technology leading decliners. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.28% rose 41.08 points, or 0.3%, to 14,799.40, leaving it down 1.8% for the week. This was the Dow’s worst week since the one ended on April 19.Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ-2.31% was the top decliner, while Procter & Gamble Co. PG+2.90% was the top gainer in the Dow on Friday.Paul Vigna and David Wessel discuss comments from St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, and TollGrade CEO Edward Kennedy looks at how best to prevent summer power outages. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.22% fell 7.39 points, or 0.2%, to end at 3,357.25, leaving it with a weekly loss of 1.9%. The tech-heavy index was hurt by a 9.3% drop in shares of Oracle Corp. ORCL-9.26%. The tech bellwether delivered a disappointing quarterly earnings report late Thursday.More than 2 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 5.6 billion.Friday was a quadruple-witching session, meaning expirations for index futures, options on index futures, single-stock futures and stock options. Such sessions can be the most heavily traded days of the year.
Friday’s gains came after The Wall Street Journal suggested that investors may be misreading the Federal Reserve’s message. Jon Hilsenrath, the Journal’s Fed watcher, wrote a blog saying that markets may be overlooking several dovish signals sent by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.
U.S. stocks, along with commodities and bonds, fell sharply in the previous two sessions after Bernanke said in a news conference Wednesday that the central bank may scale back its bond buying later this year. While the Fed may do so, Hilsenrath wrote, it will be a long time before the Fed raises short-term interest rates. The Dow’s slide on Wednesday and Thursday — a drop of 560 points or 3.66% — was its worst two-day drop since the two sessions ended Nov. 1, 2011.Investors also absorbed remarks from St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard, who explained on Friday why he voted against the Fed decision. Bullard said the Fed’s decision to lay out its plans to taper bond buys was badly timed. The Fed should have waited “for more tangible signs” of economic improvement and a halt in the downward direction for inflation, according to Bullard. The rise in the 10-year Treasury yield10_YEAR+5.26% — which surged to 2.53% on Friday, its highest level since August 2011 — is providing a headwind for stocks, according to Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at Robert W. Baird & Co. He said 2.5% is a key level. “If it breaks through there, I think the market will really have some problems,” he said.
