Post No. 2,243 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14760.31 up 100.75 or 0.69% from Monday's close of 14659.56. Of the Dow components 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.44 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 3.01%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealthcare down 92 cents or 1.42%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.02 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.17 (last year it was 13.78); today's P/E estimate is 13.35 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 13.35 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.49 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.68). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1922.03 up 13.12 from Monday's closing numerator of 1908.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.07 up 44 cents from Monday's average of $63.63. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.35 (DIS/UNH) down 20 cents from Monday's median closing price of $63.55. The lowest volume was TRV and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,312 ($192,203 - $190,891).
Tuesday MarketWatch 4:34 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose sharply on Tuesday as Wall Street cheered
upbeat economic data showing increases in durable-goods orders, new-home
sales and consumer confidence.“For the first time in this current cycle, we’ve looked at good economic
data as good news. If we continue to get the market reacting positively
to good economic data, we’ve gotten to the place we should be,” said
Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets LLC.
“If we can continue to root for good news in the economic-data stream,
that’s going to be a major transition” from worrying about what the
reports mean for U.S. monetary policy, Hogan added.
“Good news for the economy should be good news for investors and this
report is good,” emailed Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG
LLC, referring to the durable-goods report.
Another report from the Commerce Department had new-home sales rising 2.1% last month. Separately, the S&P/Case-Shiller index of home values rose 12.1% in April from a year earlier, the biggest jump in more than seven years. The Conference Board’s consumer-confidence index rose to 81.4 in June from 74.3 in May.After closing at its lowest level since April 22 on Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average
