Post No. 2,209 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall St. Journal, New York Times yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15,115.57 down 208.96 or 1.36% from Thursday's close of 15,324.53. For the week the Dow is down 187.53 or 1.22% from last Friday's close of 15,303.10. For the year the Dow is up15.35 %. Of the Dow components 2 gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Intel up 7 cents or 0.29% The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble down $2.08 and percentage-wise was UnitedHealthcare down 3.14%.
IBD pB8 "Stocks fall hard and fast late in day; uptrend shaky" by Paul Whitfield sayss tocks sold off hard Fri showing weakness into the close for the thrid day in a row as Friday's action was sharply down in higher volume and the Current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
Sat. WSJ pB1 "Late stock drop beies strong May" by Alexandra Scaggs says a late day slide Fri marked a weak finish to the latest strong month for US stocks.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.51 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.73 (last year it was 13.35); Monday's P/E estimate is 14.05 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 13.75 (year ago it was 11.78) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.42 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.35 (last year it was 2.77). The Dow's all-time high was 15,409.39 on May 28, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1968.29 down 27.21 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1995.50. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.61 down 91 cents from Thursday's average of $66.52. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.96 (DIS/UNH) down $1.69 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $64.65. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,721 ($199,550 - $196,839).
Friday
MarketWatch 4:12 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Friday
afternoon as Wall Street closed another month of gains with a whimper
after mixed economic reports. “We’ve had a week of mediocre news for the
United States; not a soft
patch, not concerning, but certainly not inspiring,” said Jim Russell,
senior equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management in Cincinnati.
“We would like to see a quiet summer, where the market marks some time
and consolidates some recent gains,” added Russell of Wall Street’s
advance, which has the Dow Jones Industrial Average

will be watched closely for clues on
any change in the Federal Reserve’s policy toward quantitative easing.
There will be key interest-rate decisions by the European Central Bank
and the Bank of England, where Gov. Mervyn King will mark his final
appearance. “With interest rates being revalued, stocks are being
revalued too. We
haven’t seen the ‘great rotation’ (out of bonds and into stocks), but we
are seeing rotation within the stock market itself,” said J.J. Kinahan,
chief strategist at TD Ameritrade. The S&P 500 marked seventh
monthly advance, its longest monthly
winning streak since one ending in September 2009. The Dow industrials
recorded their sixth straight monthly gain.“I think bulls would consider it a victory to come out of today with
