Post No. 2,782 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 8/7/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 8/7/14.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16560.54 down 9.44 or 0.06% from Monday's close of 16569.98. For the year the Dow is down 0.10%. Of the Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was DuPont up 46 cents and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 0.74%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies down 81 cents or 0.77%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks decline in quiet trading" by Chris Dieterich says US stocks edged lower as investors paused after a 2 day rebound from a recent swoon.
NYT pB3 "Oil prices drag energy shares lower" by Reuters says the stock market slight decline occurred on light trading vol typical of mid-August.
AJC pA11 "Global tensions a damper" by AP says the stock market pulled back Tues as investors focused on the damage due to geopolitical tensions.
IBD pB4 "Modest losses for stocks, but small caps fall hard" by Ken Shreve says Tuesday's action saw modest losses in mixed trade as small caps were hit hard. The current outlook is the market is in a correction.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.73 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.72 (last year it was 16.87). Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.51 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.51 (year ago it was 13.92) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.24 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.24 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 17113.54 on July 2, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2578.74 down 1.47 from Monday's numerator of 2580.21. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.96 down 5 cents from Monday's average closing price of $86.01. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.17 (PG/HD) down 1 cent cents from Monday's median closing price of $82.18 (PG/HD/. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $147 ($258,021 - $257,874).
8/12/14 Tues. 4:06 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session slightly lower as investors remained jittery amid tension between Ukraine and Russia and lingering concerns about sectarian wars in the Middle East.
Fears over geopolitical tensions and a potential U.S. interest-rate hike pushed investors to scale back risk and increased cash levels to two-year high this month, according to a Bank of America Merrill Lynch fund-manager survey.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.16% closed down 3.18 points, or 0.2% to 1,933.74. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.06% slipped 9.44 points, or 0.1%, to 16,560.54 and turned negative for the year. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.27% shed 12.08 points, or 0.3%, to 4,389.25.
Steven Wieting, global chief investment strategist at Citi Private Bank, said recent geopolitical headlines have been a catalyst for investors to reduce the level of risk in their portfolios across global financial markets.
Wieting warned, however, that “at a time when markets now suddenly begin to appreciate risk, we should not suddenly ignore a reality in which U.S. corporate earnings have risen 35% from post-2007 peaks, share prices have risen a less robust 22%, and profit gains persist.”
Tensions between Ukraine and Russia escalated after Russian sent a convoy carrying aid for eastern Ukraine on Tuesday. The convoy has not reached the Ukrainian border, and the Ukraine government had threatened to not allow the vehicles to cross onto its territory, claiming the convoy was carrying military gear in the guise of aid.
Meanwhile, clashes between ISIS and Kurdish forces continued in Iraq and the U.S. sent planes to drop humanitarian aid for refugees.
In economic news, the number of job openings in June rose to 4.67 in June, the most since early 2001, Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But the survey, often cited Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen when she assesses the state of the labor market, did not move stocks.
President Obama has been criticized from the right, left and center for his actions in Iraq, bombing ISIS forces and providing aid to refugees.
Shares of Kate Spade KATE +1.03% initially soared after the handbags and accessories maker reported better-than-expected second-quarter profit and sales. But shares plunged 26% as investors focused on falling margins. Shares of Intercept Pharmaceutical ICPT -0.55% leapt 17%, after the company late Monday issued positive data about an experimental treatment for liver disease.
Flowers Foods shares FLO -4.55% stumbled 4.8% after disappointing quarterly results from the bakery goods company, whose brands include Nature’s Own. Read more about the day’s notable movers here.
Elsewhere, Germany’s DAX 30 index DX:DAX -1.21% fell after key ZEW economic-sentiment figures came in sharply lower than anticipated. Those expectations “were understandably low, given the data over the last few months and the deteriorating trade relationship between Europe and Russia,” said Craig Erlam, market analyst at Alpari UK, in emailed comments.
Oil futures CLU4 -0.14% fell 0.8%, turning lower after the International Energy Agency said world oil demand will rise less than previously thought this year. The IEA also said there’s ample supply of oil for the market.
Gold futures GCZ4 -0.08% settled a fraction higher, while dollar firmed. Asian markets overnight closed mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei Average JP:NIK +0.20% up 0.2%.
